My A1C is almost normal. My liver function is brilliant, considering the cirrhosis. But at the doc's yesterday she and I had a sort of Eureka! moment simultaneously.

I need to be doing Low Carb Higher Fat. It sounds counter-intuitive, right? I have a fatty liver (a condition separate from the cirrhosis though the cirrhosis shares elements - okay I'll stop now because I doubt anybody wants a primer on liver function!), so I should get rid of the fat as much as possible, yeah?

Nawt so much.

So away we go. I'm a little afraid because many eons ago I lost about 55 lbs following Schwarzbein, and I felt amazing ... and I suppose after the last few years of feeling the complete opposite of amazing, I'm a little wary of feeling too good. That sounds so silly.

No seriously, that's crazy talk right there.

Oh I know what I mean. I think. Maybe. A little bit?

:)

Ketogenic diets - which is low carb and high fat actually helps us lose body fat and could help the fatty liver disease

Low carb, higher fat here. It feels great having more energy while losing weight and feeling full. Good luck!

I'm surprised your doctor didn't already have you eating low carb. It works for diabetics, the only difference between the diabetic low carb diet recommended by the American Diabetic Association and regular low carb(Atkins) or ketogenic diet would be the amount of carbs and fat eaten per meal. Good luck to you.

Studies have supported that a low-carb, high fat diet actually is a good treatment for fatty liver. In only six days on a low-carb diet, the reduction in the amount of liver fat was about the same as it was for seven months (!) on a calorie-restricted diet. In addition the volume of the liver decreased quickly, probably because of less glycogen and fluids (decreased swelling).

Ah, the Diabetes Association. The Association and I disagree from time to time. We're wary friends at the moment. (bear in mind my background is in clinical research - you can probably see where I'm going by saying that) The funny thing is, my first nutritionist yelled "Atkins Phase I!". I was fine with that. Aaaaaaand then there's my Liver Guy (who is absolutely marvellous even though his office has a wooden door which looks like a particular female body part - and yeah, I told him). He'd prefer mid protein, low fat, mid carb. Then there's the endocrinologist. No raw cruciferous veggies, and a bit "meh" about the rest of it. Needless to say the past couple of years have been ... "fun" ;) Essentially though I've decided to go back to an Atkins-Schwarzbein hybrid. I know I can succeed on that one. But here we go!
