jmb3450's Journal, 02 February 2015

I was pretty freaked out this morning when I stepped on the scale and it read 218lbs, 5 lbs more than it was yesterday morning. I kept my calories pretty reasonable yesterday, under 2050 with a deficit of about 700, sodium was a little high, carbs higher than my usual amount, but I've gone a lot higher for both of them in the past without that kind of gain overnight. I'm guessing that it's due to DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) and my muscles are retaining water as a result? Yesterday was my first workout on the Total Gym, I focused on my upper body, back, and core. I'm not overly sore but there's a general burning in my back and upper body. Has anyone else experienced that kind of weight gain when they've started resistance training or weights?

I have seen myself do that. For me anyway, water is a BIG factor in what the scale says. Hang in there Jim! You're doing good!

yea I have but give it a chance you will tone up first which looks great and you lose inches. Then add more weight . don't weigh your self to much untill your body is use to it. You will get.

I've gainec 6 pounds overnight before. Not fun but it's water. My sodium intake was a little high and no BM ( I know TMI) but hang in there.

No matter how hard you try, you could not gain 6 Lb of FAT overnight. :) Or muscle either. But between too much salt: water retention. and eating late, or no BM. Yes, 6Lb more overnight can happen.

Also, make sure your scale is accurate, and calibrated. No cheap scales. :)

AND the biggest meal of the day NEEDS to be breakfast, not after 2pm. !!!! Breakfast is the easy one to scrimp on. BUT the Wrong one to cheat ourselves of needed calories. I can't stress this enough. Starting the day with a famine diet and then being surprised we are starving and overeating after noon?? Look at my weight, and my diet. :) and, don't beat yourself up. :)

Remember the saying "one step forward two steps back" sometimes our diet is like such and we can get disappointed. We have to continue moving forward. Keep doing what you been and you'll see the difference :)

2000 calories is for maintenance weight for a lot of men, depending on their height. It might be as simple as going by what your body requires, rather than what the industry says.

Thanks for the suggestions. I do believe it's just water, my calorie intake over the weekend wasn't enough to cause a big gain. I'm feeling more sore as the day goes on, I think I over-did it with my first session on the new machine and my muscles are hanging on to fluid because of it, maybe salt also so doing the usual and drinking lots of water.
