Look at it this way: if they are looking at you, it's because they admire your motivation and appreciate that you are doing what you need to do to improve your health and physical fitness.

I was just like you. Walking into the gym for the first time was extremely hard. I imagined everyone was looking and judging but I was there for me not them. It's easy to walk into the gym when you have confidence or a friend. But when it's the hardest thing in the world to do and you still do it...that makes you far more awesome then anyone else in there.
I've lost 17 lbs (so far) and it wouldn't have happened if I didn't walk into the gym and do my workout.
Good luck, you can do it.

This was the first time I didn't go with my grandmother. But I took my husband on a pass to let him try it out. I think I'll be able to go on my own. I will just be shy at first

I told my husband that I think an MP3 player will help me not pay attention to people around me :)

most definitely! I have a hard time working out or running without tunes: put on my headphones, crank up the noise, and get in the zone.

I was extremely self conscious at first. However, after going 3 or 4 times a week you realize everyone is there for the same reasons. I still do not talk to anyone. I have my earbuds in and i either listen to my own music or plug into their tv/radio on the treadmill and eliptical. They may see you and even acknowledge you but they aren't looking at you per se. I get my workout in and get on with my day. It'll get better.

hey Extreme170, I don't know how it is where you are but I belong to LA fitness, this is the latest gym - I have been involved with a few over the years and actually a lot of people wear mp3 players for the reason that they go into there very own world and forget about everyone else there when they work out. I do that myself, not because I worry about people looking at me but because it helps me focus on what I am doing. Try it

I figure at first I will just work out in the theater room, until I get used to it. Then work my way out in the middle of everyone

I second the music. I spend a lot of time in the gym and there are a lot of social butterflies that spend more time chatting than actually working out. By listening to loud music, not only does it produce kind of a tunnel vision, but I work out a lot harder too.
