gingin40's Journal, 15 October 2014

Yesterday was a pretty typical day for me. First, I began my day by applying for jobs. I received a call later that day about a potential job opening. The job is very close to where I live (I am mostly applying for jobs further away) and incorporates everything I learned in college. I will apply for this job and others and wait for the call for a job interview. Afterwards, I spent the rest of the day with constant activity (exercise, cleaning my apartment, etc.)

I also made an important decision about my weight loss. Thanks to Fat Secret, I am learning to control my food portions in a way that keeps me accountable. I always log everything I eat because I want to know what foods may cause my weight to go up and the amount of calories I need daily to help me lose weight. But I have decided that I will not stop eating certain foods just because I am afraid I will ruin my weight loss. Moderation of food is definitely key to my future weight loss. I also want to try new foods without the worry that it will not work with my diet restrictions. So I decided to create a food bucket list and try food that is popular in other countries. Thanks to Amazon, this is possible. The first food I will try may make some of you question my sanity, but comes from the great country of Britain. The food I have just ordered is Marmite yeast extract. I have heard that that some people like it and some do not. If anyone has tried Marmite or Vegemite let me know what you think of it. If you have a food bucket list or a just a meal you want to try let me know.

My mom always had some and loved it as a spread on toast. I was never a fans a kid, but have it also on my list to try again.

I was born in England and was raised with a mum who loved Marmite. I used to call it "Satan's Feces", because I thought it was probably one of the worst things one could ever willingly put in their mouth. I haven't had it in at least 30 years, so I don't know if my adult palate would like it or not. Good luck! :)

I have been trying new grains this past month. I didn't care for cous cous because of the texture, but I loved quinoa. And I also made it a goal this summer to try a new vegetable or fruit and found some keepers. :)

I try new things at least once a month. I actually have several grains in my pantry that I haven't had a chance to try. I have discovered that I make too much at one time so have started making 1/2 the amount on any recipe. It's just me and I simply can't eat it all before it spoils.

Whole grain Teff is a great new grain to try out, if you're feeling adventurous. It's from Northern Ethiopia and is relatively high in protein and gluten-free and it's the world's smallest grain! I've made "polenta" with it and a few different types of veggie burgers and really enjoy it. I can't find it locally, so I buy mine online from Bob's Red Mill.

I have teff flour that I need to try. I recently found the grain locally in a couple ethnic markets, without having to drive clear to whole foods, 70 miles round trip. Have not yet tried it.

I really like kamut, and roasted whole barley.

Unfortunately, both of those grains are off the menu for me these days, with Celiac disease so prevalent in my family. :(

Have to pay attention to that.
