bigbassbrent's Journal, 02 October 2014

I am a little down lately. I still haven't worked out since last Friday. I have come to the realization that my knee is holding me back with my current weight training routine. I can no longer do normal squats. Since I started squatting my right knee has progressively gotten worse. (It was bad before squatting) It's grinds because I have cartilage damage and arthritis and lately it started hurting all the time, not just after workouts. Per my doctors’ advice, I tried squatting to parallel for a few weeks instead of going all the way down but that still hurts me just as much. I am so bummed. My big goal was to get to the 1000lb club with a combined weight for squat, deadlift and bench press. Now that goal seems impossible. I was actually getting really good at squats and was about to squat 200lbs for reps. I could hardly squat my body weight when I started back in June.

I guess my plan will be to continue my workout routine, but on Mon and Friday I will only be doing lighter weight box squats, to parallel. Wish me luck. I am going to give it a go tomorrow.

My work and my life have been really busy lately. I’m just trying to keep up! Sorry I have not had time to be my normal supportive self here. I hope everyone is doing great!

Thanks aschweik. I researched the collagen a while back but never pulled the trigger. I may try this first since it is cheaper. @br_e_co, You are right. I just need to slow down. Since I am a beginner in the lifting realm I started with a progression program. I moved on to another progression program since the first one was centered around squats. My current program still has me squatting twice a week but the reps are lower. I think I need to reset all my lifts then do weekly progressions rather than adding weight each workout. I gotta remember that I am not a young buck anymore. My mind and my body argue about this frequently!

I've read that too, that there's no scientific evidence for G/C. It's just that... it works for me. I think all of these things have more to do with triggering specific body chemistries. I know people who swear by the flu shot. I, and several other people I know, get far more susceptible to the flu if we take it. The four years I got it were horrible, the fourth included a bout of walking pneumonia. Once I quit taking it, I very rarely get the flue and then only very mildly. Just in case you're thinking that only people in certain groups with certain problems shout take it, I'm asthmatic. Without the flu shot, I don't need inhalers. With the flu shot, yep, you guessed it. As to scientific proof, bumblebees couldn't fly according to physics up until about 25 years ago.

@Bigbrassbrent ... i am right there with you ... my mind says one thing ... but my body SCREAMS another. ;) I don't think there is a day I don't have DOMS or achey joints, or some other small ache or pain. I have to force myself to take a single day off and even then I think I need to walk 4 miles or something.

I like to walk. I get at least two miles in each day during the week. I only work out M-W-F. DOMS was not to bad for me when I was eating more carbs but when I keep my carbs low, like right now, I have less joint pain but the DOMS is way worse. Sucks getting older but it is what it is and we all have to deal with it. Thanks br_e_co!
