Hermiones Mom's Journal, 23 September 2014

So I wrote a whole journal entry earlier today -- but then the page went wonky and I think it's lost. I guess I'll start over. Bloodwork came back: A1C is fine at 5.8. Fasting blood sugar is 35 points lower than 1 year ago, now at 90. No one has any explanation for why there are people with fasting blood sugar on the high end of normal and normal A1C, but my doctor says as long as my A1C is good, I should just keep doing what I'm doing and not worry about it. More worrisome is that although my total cholesterol is now 112 points lower than it was when my thyroid problem was first diagnosed, it's still just over 200, and my good cholesterol is actually getting worse, not better. I think that might be because the whole summer since I got sick, I haven't been able to eat broccoli or any of the other stuff that supports good cholesterol. Now I'm starting back on some raw fruits (berries) and adding back into my diet all the various cooked veggies-- last night I roasted cauliflower and Brussels sprouts-- and I seem to have survived it. We'll see if I still feel ok tomorrow. I'm still sticking with only lactose free dairy. But yesterday, I did have a cappuccino -- and I took a Lactaid tablet with it, and it worked out OK. Lastly, my thyroid is still off, so probably the doctor will up my meds. Anyway -- that's the full report -- documented mostly so in six weeks, I have something to compare the next set of results to.

I could have sworn you were already a buddy. I guess I just keep seeing you on my other buddies' posts. It sounds like we have similar health issues. I also have a rescue daughter but mine is now 27. Thanks for the buddy request. We'll just keep on keeping on!

LOL! I had a Sheltie years ago . . . a boy, now I have a flame point Siamese, a lynx point snowshoe, a 17 yr. old Yorkie and a cockatoo. The rescue daughter is on her own. :-)

HM your lab results sound pretty good, right? I always have my thyroid tested and it's always normal. I don't know what my problem is. Maybe I just eat too much. LOL! .... naw!!!!!

I think my thyroid is part of why I have to eat a lot less than other people to lose weight. But even more than the thyroid issue, I wish I had understood about my blood sugar issues and the impact of low-glycemic eating a long time ago. I now know a couple other people who have the same combination of issues I have: low thyroid, bad good-to-bad cholesterol ratio but close to normal total cholesterol, and slightly high fasting blood sugar -- mine was as high as 125 before I got back on this diet again, and it's now dropped to 90. I've discovered, as has a close friend, that eating low glycemic has a huge impact on how we feel and how the weight comes off. Almost as soon as I jettison all white food (except milk and cauliflower!) from my diet, as well as the higher sugar fruits, I feel better and weight comes off. And it's just not all that hard to substitute brown rice for white; sweet potatoes or cauliflower for white potatoes; sprouted grain bread for regular; quinoa and hulled barley as the preferred starches...and to be sure to measure the portions. Mom2B's -- maybe you should try this.
