Apparently it's a miracle the human race isn't extinct. I called to delay my next appointment with the OB/GYN by a week because I'm busy, they cost $180 a pop just to listen to a babies heartbeat and check my blood pressure, and well.. I feel great and the baby is kicking up a storm so I consider that a check in the are we doing alright box. You'd think I had called them to tell them I was going to walk across the US in flip flops. It's amazing we have managed to multiply. Heck.. those ancestors who never had monthly or weekly drs visits or had children at home?? They were miracles! *snort* I got a 20 minute lecture on blood clots and the need to walk around from a nurse, a 10 minute lecture on how 24 weeks is a critical time from the receptionist, and FINALLY they delayed my appointment. By a freaking week. I wonder what they will say if I refuse to do the whole 2 week appointment until the very end. Ok.. end emotional pregnant chick rant. At least I didn't call them all coin counting idiots like I wanted to. :) The baby is happily thumping away as I type. See? He agrees.

I weighed myself today and it wasn't pretty. 202.6. I went over my 200 lb goal. Poop. Oh well. What comes on will come off and I get the feeling this is another one of those hearty farm boys. I can claim that. The ultrasound tech claimed to see a bicep at 22 weeks. Plus I think he's boxing with one of my ribs. I do need to start actually watching what I'm eating and drinking and doing though so I don't go too badly over 200. Plus then I can wave the evidence in front of the doctor when they lecture me on the importance of appointments and taking care of myself. I consider blood pressure raising 2 minute appointments for $180 that require 45 minutes of waiting around bad for my health. I could get a blood clot from all that sitting around waiting to be called in. Heck I could spend that hour in the gym which would be alot healthier.

Next visit I think I will tell them all about our amish neighbors who never see doctors until it's time to deliver. Get their thoughts on that one.

Sorry they gave you such a hard time, maybe if weekly prenatal appointments were so damn important they would make them a little more affordable... or offer to see you for a reduced rate because they genuinely care about the health of the baby... but nope, it's all about that almighty dollar. If you feel fine and the baby is active than I don't see the issue. You can get your BP checked at any pharmacy for freakin free. UGH... okay, my rant is over now :-) I think you're doing just fine. As far as watching what you eat and drink, maybe just stick with water and cut out beverage calories. That would be an attainable goal, and wouldn't put any nutritional strain on you or baby. Hope you have a great day!

The feeling is healthcare is generally recession proof and I agree as long as some people continue to fall prey to the highest sales pressure of all: well checkups and more. I don't have any Mommy advice for prenatal care but know for just taking care of myself I have more of an ostrich in the sand approach. Not saying it's healthy. Just less expensive. Plus I'm exposed to fewer sick folk by not sitting in a doctors waiting room. And.. the truth is .. at my age.. I think it's like sticking an old car up on the rack. It's just asking for trouble. Something is going to leak that shouldn't and squeak because it's out of fluid. No sense borrowing trouble.

Yikes! Somehow my weekly appointments don't cost me (everything else does!) or I would be pushing them back too! I tried to push one once and my doc shut me down. It is quite annoying for non problematic pregnancies to go in there wait forever and see the doctor for 90 seconds!

How dare you not go to a scheduled visit! It's not like they can't fill your appointment with someone else. And, it's not like you haven't been through this before. If you were a first time mom you'd be more worried about keeping the appointments, but this is your 3rd, so you know the routine. Watch what you eat and try to get to the gym when you can and that should keep you from getting too far over that 200 mark. Just keep that baby healthy!

You should read a medical anthropology textbook if you think that is all that is interesting about Western medicine.

I read a super interesting article a few months ago about the cost of having a baby in this country (USA) vs. anywhere else in the world. The difference is just plain crazy. I mean, really, if I ever get pregnant I'll consider moving overseas. I don't know if it is all the pre-natal monitoring or just the fact that our system is so overpriced, but it seems ridiculous. On a related note, in Finland new mothers get a "baby box" from the government (regardless of income levels) that has lowered the mortality rates for infants and instances of post partum depression. Here's the link: http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-22751415 . Sorry to get all political, but the baby box just seems like such a SIMPLE idea for health and wellness.
