Sandy701's Journal, 17 September 2013

Thanks Buffy, Bren, Heather, & Issy for the comments on my last journal. I read them all but got caught up in too many activities over the weekend. When I did log on, I was just too mentally tired to come up with any coherent thoughts....that ever happen to anyone else?

Anyhoo...DH and I are experiencing a delayed Friday the 13th today. He's broken his shaver, dropped and cracked his phone, discovered his toothbrush had lost its charge, popped a button off his uniform.....and that was all before 6:15AM! I went out to turn on the heat pump for the pool and it's throwing an error code and will not work. The forecast was for about a 10% chance of rain and we've had a deluge that's more like a tropical storm. Sheesh!

If you see any locusts heading our way.....wait a minute....we HAVE had an influx of love bugs.....saw someone else down here in the South journaling about that the other day.

Lots of thoughts running through my head relating to this WOE lately. I jumped head first into PB Land yesterday and I've got to wonder what's going on. Seems like about every 2 weeks, I just can't get enough of the stuff. Have I crossed over into being too restrictive? Even for a relatively short period of time?

I've always believed that if one goes too low in calories, it can only last for so long before the body WILL force one to eat more/better. IMO, that's why you see so many super-low-calorie folks going off the deep end for a meal....a weekend.....or a week.....or longer. Eventually, the body MUST EAT!

I do know that I've been bored with the foods I've been eating and wanting something...ANYTHING....different. Today, I guess you could say that I'm playing around and not really staying within this restrictive cage I've built for myself lately. No, not off plan, but, for instance, I had a short amount of time before a meeting today, so I had an Atkins breakfast bar. NOT the best choice (moderately high SAs from the dreaded maltitol and high total carbs) but it was different and it fit what I needed right then. I may even have spaghetti squash for dinner; perfectly fine food, but not what I've had lately.

The new Jimmy Moore/Dr. Eric Westman book, "Cholesterol Clarity" should arrive any day now. While there were good reviews posted on Amazon, I was drawn to a negative review that was very well-written, with many, many citations. I've always said I keep an open mind on this WOE. While I currently believe it's the best for weight loss and health issues, if something comes up that refutes some/all of the low-carb claims, I'm willing to consider the information. The negative review of the book doesn't claim to say that low-carb is unhealthy, but it brings up some information I haven't heard before. We shall see.....

Diet Calendar Entry for 17 September 2013:

Sandy, it kind of "dawned" on me as I read your journal that I go through phases too. I totally believe human nature kicks in sooner or later & we have to deal with it. I get bored too. Knowing myself as I do...for me that can be really dangerous. More so in the past (prior to Atkins), way more controllable (sp?) now. I think that is pretty normal though, just how we as individuals go about dealing with it. So, for me...when that happens, if/when I get bored/more hungry (hard to tell the difference sometimes), or the hormones kick in (combo is Really BAD), I just tell myself that for today only I can eat Whatever & as much as I want as long as it is technically low-carb. I know I will go waaaay over in calories/carbs, but that feeling of being bored, or un-satisfied goes away & I haven't totally destroyed my WOE. Looking forward to your book review!

Sending you a good luck charm to reverse your deluge of bad fortune! As for our diets, I agree with you and GG that it is good to throw in something different every now and then. I've been trying to add some variety, making make my splurges super nutritious foods like sweet potato, blueberries, etc. Not losing weight but not bored either - LOL. Some day we'll get it right!

GG, I like your idea to give yourself permission to just eat on-plan, regardless of amount, when that "feeling" comes on. For me, it's hard telling when I'm truly hungry when I'm also tired....which I have been for a couple days now. That's my Danger Combination!

Bren, some day I'd like to believe that I can have an appropriate amount of PB without going overboard, but that's still very much a work in progress. :)

Buffy, please do send me that good luck charm. Meanwhile, my new food this week is a Florida avocado, not the usual Haas one. I hope I can stand all the excitement.... LOL!

Sandy - I am a copycat tonight. Saw that you were having avocado so I decided I'd have one too - even though it sent my calories through the roof - it was sooooo worth it.

Hi Sandy, I hear you, you know I did the same thing, I was eating too little, too many days in a row, got frustrated when I didn't get the payback I expected, fell off the wagon for a few days and paid the price. Sigh. Part of the reason I fell off was I listened and read some stuff about my chosen WOE - low carb - that refuted it and said it was a waste of time, around the same time that I wasn't seeing the weight loss I expected. I find it very hard to trust myself. But I learned from this last go round that low carb definitely works for me. I can eat high carb or higher carb as long as its food and not junk. So enjoy the book but I wouldn't give up on your lifestyle just yet. It has served you well. Not sure why PB calls you so much. Perhaps you need more protein and are just bored with the forms of protein you have been eating? And I don't see anything wrong with eating an Atkins bar unless you find it stalls you. I have never found that to be the case for me. I now eat Quest protein bars. They are a bit chewy but they have 20gm of protein and nothing in them that I can't pronounce - lol. Good luck, keep us posted, as I know you will.

Oh, and sorry to hear of all the misfortunes - you so don't have time for all that crap at that time in the morning. Hope things got better :)
