Help! I need advice. I have had an upper respiratory "thing" brewing since Sunday. I have a scratchy throat, nasal drainage, and a cough. I am medicating with DayQuil and a sugar-free Ricolla throat lozenges. I am drinking twice as much water as I normally do and visiting the bathroom twice as often (I don’t think it is water retention) I have not cheated on my diet but the scale is showing gains. So which is more likely; the meds are causing gains or my body isn’t letting me lose because I’m getting sick?

Is there a better med for me to take? I’m going to discuss with my doctor on Monday but I would really prefer to get this figured out now rather than waiting a full week.

Check the ingredients I think there is sugar in DayQuil. Also Dr. Atkins says that medications like DayQuil can cause weight loss issues because they do influence hormones and insulin even if there is no sugar in them. I don't lose weight if I take DayQuil, but sometimes if you can't rest, you have to take it. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just get better. You aren't doing anything wrong, sometimes we just have to take cold medicine.

Don't worry about taking the medicine if you need it. Ask your doctor for something in pill form when you see him or her. Usually when I have a cold or flu I eat less in the long run so a little sugar won't matter. After you get better and get off the DayQuil you might try induction a few days to get back on track if you've gained too much. Hope you feel better soon. If you need medicine with sugar in it you might have to take it. Sometimes I took Robitussin last winter. In the long run I still lost weight... :)

First of all... are you on any Rx meds for BP or other conditions? That is the first and foremost. 2nd please ask your local pharmacist to help in suggestions. If you are eating good ol' chicken soup, great for helping to heal you from colds, it is loaded with sodium. Look at your sodium contents, too. The pharmacist will be able to recommend sugar free meds and or if BP is an issue, meds that would work with that, as well. Definitely keep up with the extra fluids... HOT tea, with fresh lemon juice and a tsp of honey is sooo helpful *I love the sleepytime tea by celestial seasons, or any chamomile tea will work, too. * But, I would goto the pharmacy and ask for the pharmacist to help you pick something to assit you in your symptom control. ;) Feel better, take a hot shower/bath, the steam is good for the lungs, too! :)

Thanks everyone. I took a trip to the store at lunch and the pharmacist suggested Robitussin for “diabetics”. As a side note, I really dislike it when people get labeled like that...as if they are a walking life support system for their disease. It should be Robitussin for people with diabetes… but that’s a whole other rant. It just doesn't seem to be working as well as the throat lozenges. I think you are all right...I'm going to have to take whatever is necessary to get better and deal with the gain after. Darn changing seasons!! I do this every year.
