Well - I'm back. I took almost a full month off from Atkins. When I stopped following a low carb way of eating the cravings came rushing back as did a huge amount of water weight. I've been tracking my calorie intake the entire time and reached an all time high two weeks ago with an average of 2300 calories per day..not good. In total, the scale showed an 8 pound gain during that time. I'm sure that is a combination of actual pounds and water weight gain.

Last week I recommitted, and surprisingly, was able to lose those 8 pounds in one week. I’ve probably jump started my metabolism with previous overages, combined with the water weight being under control. Regardless, I'm thrilled, but a bit nervous about next week.

I have made the decision to NOT return to Atkins. It has been great for me (100lbs lost) but I'm not sure (actually I know) that I won't follow that way of eating forever. Knowing that, it’s important that I find a way of eating that I can live with…forever.

Instead, I am still counting calories and trying to balance carbs, protein, and fat. Jillian Michaels website suggests a 40% carb to 30% protein to 30% fat ratio based on my metabolic rate....or something like that. After taking a quiz the site says I'm a balanced oxidizer. Bottom line – I’m counting calories (1535 per day) and trying to make healthy choices.

I've quickly figured out that by following this way of eating I get the munchies at night. BIG TIME. So, I've planned my meals so that I can accommodate those without going over my calorie intake. I have a light breakfast, medium size lunch, hearty afternoon snack and dinner, and a light snack before bed. I also started having my dinner at a slightly later hour. I don't eat after 8:00pm but I do eat my evening snack very close to that. It seems to be working...the munchies are under control.
