Ms Elizabeth's Journal, 09 April 2013

During my lunch with Thynes I shared one of the issues we have at the farm and some confusion it's causing between hubby and I. She says I need to share this so all you lovely people can decide whose more insane. Me or Hubby.

Our farm butts up again some swamp land and we're getting that land fenced in for pastures since we're losing some of the other land. Hubby says it's great because we can save some money by not fencing in one side. But... I keep picturing all the cows wading into the swamp then going down the stream like big ol cow bobber. They're big round girls.. they're going to float down stream and we'll never see them again! Hubby just said.. they won't go in the swamp.. sighed.. and said he had to go because the guy giving the fence estimate was giving him funny looks. Thynes doesn't think they're going to go in the swamp because they can't swim. But why not? Seriously? If I'm a cow stuck in a field and I can go for a lil swim I'm going to make a break for it. Break out the snorkle here I go!

Oh and Thynes.. I texted the guy that helps hubby milk on Fridays and he says cows can float. I had to ask someone.. hubby won't answer my calls now. Although... the helper guy isn't answering after I told him my cow bobber theory either. EDIT: The guy says they will come back when they get to the end of the creek. EDIT: He wants to know what bar I'm at.

In case you're wondering... I've only been a dairy farmers wife for 3 years now. Things like this just don't come up every day. :)

we don't fence the side of our pasture that butts up against the river...never lost cows over it. But one year when my dad was a boy and a bad April storm hit (like the one we're getting now) and the river was frozen they wind drove them across. Dad, uncle and grandpa had to ride out on the frozen Missouri river to herd them back. Said it was the scariest thing he's done.

I know less than nothing about farming (or swamps, or cows, or anything for that matter)... but all I can picture is a bunch of cows trying to trek into the swamp and getting stuck/falling over and you guys having to drag them out.

Eh.. the girls are pretty skittish when it comes to that kind of thing. We have a hard time getting them through the hoof bath and it's only 2 inches deep. There are a couple of them that were born with less than half a brain though.

In hot weather, swamps dry out too and cows go wandering...My experience is cows will always go where they shouldn't go. If you don't want them in the swamp, put up the fence! I wouldn't want to be washing udders after the cows have romped the the swamp...stinky!!!

Didn't you see my message? I even sent a link for a video of cows swimming.... trust me people I think all those sitting around us at Wegman's saw that we are both certifiable! I think we were laughing so hard we about fell out of our chairs!!

I think it was the floating cow bobbers that did it. Maybe if I hadn't called them floating cow bobbers hubby would have explained it. I wonder if the helper has called him yet to see if I need to be certified.

I should have asked Kelly. She's the genetics girl for the herd. Hubby would have never heard the end of that conversation. Maybe I still should.

I wouldn't think the cows will go in the swamp either. And they will come back, because they know where the good food is; that's why I keep going back to Panera and Olive Garden and well most places that aren't good for me.

I live in an area that has lots of small dairy farms also and I have seen cows cross a pond. I think they would go into the swamp just because cows are dumb.

My grandparents had a fence in about 5' deep water - granted it was a pond. I don't ever really remember cows swimming across a pond - one that wasn't fenced, but I do know when they get hot, they do like to wade out into the water (sometimes up to their necks) to get cool. Most just hug the shallow end, standing to get their legs wet. Not sure how they will be with a swamp, but I would think they would definitely get out in the water.

ooooh wine packages! I can tell him I'm doing research. I'm still trying to sell him on a side business of starting my very own winery. I want to put it in juice boxes and call them Adult Juice Packs.
