GlennM's Journal, 01 August 2010

Went to bed late - early a.m. and lay flat on my stomach, which is usually comfortable for me and my back pain locked up severely. I couldn't move hardly. It took quite a bit of praying and about fifteen minutes before I was up to get to the bathroom to pee. Then I couldn't sit comfortably so I gingerly got dressed and called to get to the ER. There was no way I was getting any sleep in my condition. I got there and got an IV on the way and they lifted me onto the ER stretcher with sheets - I couldn't transfer. Anyway, I got strong meds, which helped for now. It is imperative I get pain-blocking shots now. My dad brought me back - it was good to see him - I haven't seen him since Christmas. The writing is going well on a side note. Goal: five books completed in at least first draft form or better on the computer by years' end. Two are already in final draft form. I'm suffering health-wise but making progress with the writing and know it's inevitable that I will get published. I may post a grateful list soon, when I am feeling better. The meds I got this morning were fairly strong. I just want the pain to go away so I can bike, walk, etc. sometime soon. This week I plan to get more serious about calorie and carb intake than I have been lately after those Cortisone shots twelve days ago.
Calories for July 31, 2010: 2220.
Vocabulary word for Sunday: Weltschmerz -noun- a kind of lingering sorrow, melancholy or world-weariness that some believe is a given in life. ------ Origin from German meaning literally: "world pain".

I'm sorry to hear you are still having fairly serious difficulties with your back. I may have missed it but do we know why you are having these back pains? Hope you feel better soon buddy!

Yes info, I have arthritis in my spine. I was diagnosed with arthritis at age 19 and now it's flaring up badly. I looked at my birth astrology chart - there are a few long-term harsh aspects affecting me through next year that may make things rough. My twin sister has been dealing with pain issues too, but less severe. I borrowed a neighbor's heating pad. I will go buy one ASAP. It is a help. The pain was unreal, and I just want it to go away. It is in the back at the beltline where the hips go near the spine, it like locks up. I am weary of talking about this, but it is happening seriously and it is affecting my whole life. The arthritis flared up badly when I was young and I was discharged from the military because of it too. Anyway, thanks info for your kind words on wishing me better... :) I slept all day. A good way not to get many calories in...

I can't imagine arthritis in the back. My hands are enough. I find warm water baths help as well as heating pads. Maybe a Thermocare would help. I hope you are feeling better and get back to your writing. My son writes SF. He is not published yet either.

Well, there must be some effective way of dealing with the pain as it sounds almost crippling.

try yoga. I have arthritis in my back and I've been going to yoga classes for a about a year and it seems to be helping. The stretching helps and the exercises that strengthen the back help too. I feel stronger. Still having some pain but I seem to be able to manage it better. I also take glucosamine.

Thanks everyone for writing. I can't do yoga right now - it is too painful. I did it a few years ago, but it is quite intensive and there is no way my back will hold up to it now. It locked up so bad I couldn't transfer from the stretcher from the ambulance to the one in the ER room. They gave me pain meds through the IV and it eased it up. I can't just keep taking strong pain meds to just function. I will get the pain-blocking shots ASAP. I am taking anti-inflammatory meds and they're not helping much. I just went shopping and bought a king size heating pad. It is odd that the pain is so bad in the summer too, it's usually winter when it's at its worst.

Hey Glenn, how are ya buddy. I sure hope you are better today. Arthritis is a bad thing. My Dr said it is so important to keep moving. Arthritis can build to a point of you being unable to move at all. Easy to say but not easy to do. I can only imagine what you are going thru with pain meds, shots, heating pads. I don't have it NEARLY as bad as you and it just plain hurts. I am no longer taking my anti-inflammatory meds and the old knee is swelling at the end of the day. I can walk during the day OK but by night it swells up and I can hardly bend it. Well Glenn, be as well as possible. There are foods and spices that they say help inflammation. Maybe if you try these out also it will help. I sure hope so. Hope you can find relief and sleep well tonight. I'm thinking of you Glenn.

Thanks Next Number - I saw my sports medicine/pain management doctor. The arthritis developed to not being able to move Sunday early a.m. when I went to bed between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. I was falling asleep on my stomach and couldn't turn to my side! I lifted my knees up and crawled off the bed, which is on the floor. I was stuck there on my hands and knees praying and yelling. It was rough. I managed to get up. I was in my boxer underwear briefs and didn't know how I managed to get dressed. I almost was going to have the ambulance paramedics dress me - I went to the bathroom and it was more comfortable to stand. Anyway, my mom was upset I let it get that bad. She has no clue. I didn't - I had Cortisone shots twelve days before that. For about a week I felt better. Each day got worse. If I just walked in say, Friday - they would have said, you're in pain - but you're walking fine aren't you? It has to get severe before something will be done. I am not going to the ER for fun. I am on pain management now, it's working fair for now. The heating pad will be on too. My doctor suggested a pain management course, not me. There are nerve burning procedures. I don't know if they're dangerous - I'll look them up tonight on the Internet. I have social workers demanding I do all sorts of things too besides work, and it's just not feasible right now. Exercise is out - I need to rest the next five days or so after Sunday at least. Thanks for stopping by... Will get to you all tomorrow I hope, going to bed soon...
