As I reflect on the time that has past since first deciding to join fat secret, I realized that actually got on the fitness train 3 years ago, but that i was more like the bum that hitches the illegal ride. I decided to get moving and joined a karate class, I never liked "gym type" exercise I always got bored- anyway i signed up for this karate class to "move" and get healthier. Just to get a good picture- when I signed up I was 44 years old, weighed 168 lbs. (mostly carried in my middle)and smoked 1 1/2 packs of cigarettes a day. I began losing weight from the workouts, even got down to around 150 lbs. I was feeling great, and wanted to feel better- I decided to quit smoking (no self respecting martial artist smokes LOL) I am happy to report I will have been smoke free for 2 years as of July 29, 2010. Unfortunately when I quit smoking I replaced my cigarettes with food, and more importantly bad food choices- hot fudge sundaes were my rewards for going with out the smokes, going out to dinner another reward and so on.. Anyway I put on a lot of weight- got up to 180lbs. Finally a combination of things happened. 1. A good friend of mine from my Karate class had a heart attack. We are close to the same age, have a lot in common as to our eating, drinking and exercise habits, and even carry excess weight in the same places (around the belly). If that isn't an eye opener what is- it could have been me. 2. I went to visit my Dad and his girlfriend informed me "you got fat!" in a way only a southern woman of a certain age can say and get away with LOL- any way that seriously jerked a knot in my chain. And 3. When I got home from the visit to my Dad I was looking at some pictures from last summer's vacation and was totally not happy with what I was seeing. I was finally seeing how big I had gotten I was at 180, with a 45" waist (actually not really a waist since it stuck out further than my bosom or my bottom) in that picture, when I was looking at it I was at 170 because of a decision to bring my lunch to work that had noting to do with weight loss. Now I am extremely happy I did that.
With the culmination of those three events/realizations I got up one morning with a determination much like the day I decided to quit smoking and meant it. I was successful with that i will be successful with this as well. I bought books on nutrition and weight loss, I searched the internet, researched exercise, healthy eating- you name it,and am happy to say I am very happy and compfortable with my new lifestyle. I love working out, not just martial arts any more but weight training, and elliptical as well, I ride my bike and walk as well. I think my instructor at the Dojo will be very proud when I get my black belt because it is not just about being good at fighting but it is a way of life and that way includes taking care of your body, mind and spirit. The fitness train is a journey that never ends... but that's OK because after it is all said and done it's about the journey not the destination.

Awesome! Everything takes time. I think we all wish we'd gotten there sooner, but on the other hand, it takes experience to be come wise about things :) It sounds like you now have a lot of wisdom about your health. I did it backwards from you- I lost about 60 pounds before I quit smoking. I took up running the week after I quit smoking and replaced cigarettes with the treadmill! I never looked back and I'm sure you won't either.
