trackin64's Journal, 21 August 2018

HEY! I did a 22 hour fast yesterday! I have been thinking about attempting a 24 hour fast but this was totally unplanned. I went from lunch Sunday to lunch Monday. (Dinner to dinner would probably be more beneficial.) I always thought I'd have trouble fasting because of a tendency to episodes of low blood sugar, but being already in fat burning mode from LCHF meant steady energy levels and no hunger.

I wish I could say it made the scales budge. It's been 2 1/2 weeks of a bouncing around 185 stall. Please don't anyone say I'm probably losing inches because I only measure my waist and it went up 1/2 inch. I did lose 10 pounds in 2 weeks doing the 800 calorie/day Blood Sugar diet so this is my body's backlash from resuming a more reasonable calorie level. At least I didn't gain it back.

If Dr. Fung is right, fasting is the only known method to correct insulin resistance so it is nice to know I can use that tool to my benefit. I have been on the border of type 2 diabetes for 15 years.

LCHF and IF doesn't guarantee weight loss. I started the Atkins/Keto woe due to health issues and it is the only woe that improved my health long-term. Make sure your doctor knows you are doing LCHF so he can take that into consideration when doing the bloodwork. They have a different chart for the right levels when on a keto type diet.

Thanks Mjgh06 for the suggestion about the doctors. They are supportive and agreeable to low carb but never have mentioned taking that into consideration when reviewing test results. All of mine are borderline so meds have been suggested. Agree with you, Baskington - the 800 calorie plan did a good job for two weeks and that was a good jumpstart. I didn't feel like doing anything, though. I did 3.5 weeks - that was enough. Now 1000 calls seems like a lot of food! Trusting my appetite on low carb.

I meant, NO meds were suggested.

The fat loss period is not far away. The insulin resistance will reduce week by week, and as you get more insulin sensitive, better buckle up for a fun ride. See for some it can take a good number of weeks. It's on your path. May be good to focus more on good meals that provide a comfortable fasting period, and take a break from the scales.

My first 24 hour fast (actually 36 hours) was in prep for medical procedure. When the fast was over I was not starving or even really hungry - couldn't believe it. I felt fantastic.

Congratulations on your fast! After reading Dr. Fung's books I did a lot of fasting. As you pint out, the most important thing is that you have a tool to use that allows you to achieve the results you desire. I have found that for me, in the end, it is the carbs (that spike my insulin - the real issue) that make the difference. Fasting basically allows me to get my carbs <10 (I still end up consuming carbs though low carb protein drinks in heavy cream - this allows me to fast for 5 days at a time without much 'effort').

Thank you, Diddlee, broncomba, adef and Keilin and other supporters. Like you, adefwebserver, I will always have to limit carbs to avoid diabetes. There is a strong genetic tendency in my family and some of the victims weren't fat at all. My mother, not fat, was already having issues when she was pregnant with me, and my siblings and I were large newborns - a hallmark of insulin issues. The mother's insulin resistance impacts the fetus' pancreas too. Some suggest this is partially why children are fatter these days.

I still think it is awesome you ate 800 calories for 2 weeks. I may have to up my game if I can't get below 200 pounds in the next couple of weeks. It is slowly coming off.
