DS107's Journal, 07 July 2018

Question. . . The last time I ate anything (Shrimp and green beans) was Wednesday afternoon approx. 1 pm. I didn't feel well and went without eating until this morning (Saturday) approx. 11 am. Before eating (today) I weighed and found that I gained 9 pounds. How is that even possible? Same scale, same time, same conditions, etc. It's not water weight because I haven't had much water. It's not muscle weight, because, well let face it, it's not muscle. When I say no food, I mean NO FOOD, nothing, not a crumb, not a sliver of a shard. Not even coffee. Nothing!

Please help,

Befuddled

My scale can give me different readings is it has moved even a half inch. I line mine up with a certain tile and go with that weight. It can be a difference of 5 lbs if someone bumps is from its spot.

Your body will retain water especially if you haven't drank any I believe.. What have you had to drink in the last 3 days?

when you don't drink your body will retain water, but it is odd to have that much of a gain, I think something may be off with the scale.

I question the scale. If it is digital, check battery. If not, be sure the dial has not been moved off 0 when no weight is applied. If you have a dumbbell or another type of comparable weight item (kettlebell, 5lb sugar/flour bag), check your scale with those - may require about 10 lb for reading. If you have the scale like the dr's office with the sliding weight, it may require recalibration.

I agree with the body retaining water. It happens to me all the time. Drink water and then drink more. The weight will disappear

I've had less than 30 oz. each day. Usually I have over 100 oz. I've felt under the weather...tired, lethargic, headache, stomachache, etc.

It has been a while since I've checked/changed the batteries. They've had a workout for the last 7 1/2 months, maybe they're tired too. Thanks.

DS107 30oz is almost 2 lbs of water. So it's possible to retain that much water when you are sick and not eating. You body can go into starvation mode like it's experiencing a famine and tries to retain everything to survive. That water weight will drop back off when you start eating regularly again.

Up that water.. I can swing 10lbs easy being around 300lbs. Get 64oz min you should have light yellow urine if you're hydrated. Your body needs water to function properly. I try to drink a gallon a day

I always show some weight gain just before I lose a few pounds, but 9 pounds?! WTH?

DS107, I would suspect the scale is not accurate. I use a balance beam scale (like in doctor's office) - no batteries or springs. However - I would also guess you aren't drinking enough water, and not getting your electrolytes. I have read too many postings from people who didn't get enough salt, got dizzy and fell, had concussion and / or black eye, cuts, etc.

I don't have an intellectual answer my dear, other than - don't give up! My weight diary dips and spikes all the time. be more concerned about how you are feeling and your health stats.

Your retaining weight your body is going into "starvation mode" You gotta eat something

Okay. I drank 108 ounces of water yesterday. I still didn't feel like eating after having lunch with my wife, so I didn't. Just water. I did my routine (I'll spare you guys the details) but I was up again, another pound. Even in my hay-day of binge eating I could gain more than 3 or 4 pounds in a week or more. Now in less than five days I've gained 10 pounds. I ate breakfast and had two cups of coffee.

First, is your scale on the same surface, tile or carpet? Best is to have it on a hard surface. Mine is in the kitchen, on the tile. It's never moved. Second, when was the last time you changed the batteries? Low batteries make mine act goofy. Change those batteries. Third, try another scale, it may just be that scale has gone bad. Forth, and this is scary, do you ever have a problem with water retention? My husband retains water easily, congestive heart failure causes very fast water retention. Not saying you have this but if you have ever had heart problems this can be dangerous. I'd try changing those batteries first and get back onto eating and drinking my regular amount of water. If you haven't been eating for several days your body is bound to be off balance.

Give it a couple days for your body to balance itself out. You should be peeing a fair amount when you become hydrated..
