Fritzy 22's Journal, 23 September 2017

I've been good at walking every day since Thursday and have been enjoying it. Taking on the hills. I have to stop right around the same place every day but hope to soon get past that and be able to walk all the way up without stopping. Of course, at this time I'm not yet walking all the way DOWN the hill so more challenges ahead. I've been trying to run on the treadmill - a slow run 3.7 to 3.9 mph to start. First day just 3 minutes, then 5 and yesterday 7 minutes. Not sure I'll keep up with the running. I enjoyed it in my 40's but in my early 60's and at my weight not so sure it's a good idea. My knee is hurting today. Last week was beautiful, with nice, fall like weather. Now we have a week of low to mid 90's coming back. I don't like hot weather. I've considered moving, but I love my house and the weather is fine from about October to the first of June. But I hate the hot summers here. Been thinking of finding a place to rent along the northern California coast for the summers but I have 2 dogs and 4 cats and I know I wouldn't rent to someone like me!

I have a doctor appointment Monday. This appointment was actually what made me originally sign up on FS. I had an appointment in early August and didn't want him to see I had gained about 20 pounds since I last saw him in February. So I signed up July 27th, changed my appointment to late September and have lost the weight I had gained. I can be very motivated with a goal! So the challenge will be to stay motivated after the appointment. I am pretty motivated now to go down one size. My clothes are fitting loose now, but not so much that the next size down is comfortable yet. I have jeans from size 6 to 16 just waiting for me in a drawer in the guest bedroom. Can't believe how much weight I gained in the past 7 or 8 years. Retirement hasn't helped, nor my father's mild dementia and then his death. Spent many mornings not even wanting to get out of bed. But I am much better now. Don't suffer from the constant fatigue that plagued me since 2011. So I don't get so tired now, but the energy level is still low. Hopefully the daily walks and losing weight will help with that.

Wow! What a long post. I wouldn't read it if it wasn't my own.

Good job on the exercise! Running is much more of an impact on your joints 😫 but look how much your progressed with it! Impressive. But not much good if it hurts you and keeps you from any exercise 😕. Stick with whatever you will be able to keep doing (long term). Nothing but admiration from me!!! Oooh! 😲 i don't like the heat/humidity either. I'll stay parked in front of a fan 😂

I'm a big fan of just walking .. lower intensity and longer duration .. for weight loss. Also, a heart rate monitor is great if you have or can afford one .. just stay in the right zone for fat burning and enjoy yourself. I used to jog a lot too, but now I don't want to risk it. There are other ways to get your heart rate way up there (if you want to) that are lower impact. You are doing great!!

Walked a little further today. It was really windy out. And my pup was so distracted by deer we saw 4 or 5 times during the walk, he kept stepping in my way trying to go to the other side of the street. I still had to stop at the same place today, but will keep trying every day. I may to try to run 8 to 10 minutes on the treadmill a little later.

Have you thought about a recumbent bike, or a stretching routine that works your whole body? Miranda Esmonde-White who has the shows on PBS has several books and DVDs out and they are lower impact than the treadmill while still getting your large muscle groups moving. 🙋🏻
