msoucie86's Journal, 06 October 2011

So i realized something important today after reading some journals and forums. i was setting myself up for starvation mode! i was eating the slim fast stuff, which is two meal bars for a total of 400 cal and 1 meal and i was trying to be sensible about the meal and was only eating maybe 200-400 more calories throughout the day! I am so new to this diet stuff I never knew about starvation mode! yet another reason why this website is a blessing :) today i plan to make it to around 1100-1300 cal and keep on going from here. glad i only caught this on day 4! or else i was going to set myself up for failure! I am trying to find a gym close to me that i am comfortable in. once I start in the gym Ill up my calorie intake even more! who knew it was so easy to starve yourself! Thanks FS for saving me :) I also, I read into spiking. a cheat day sounds good to me :p I think Sundays will be my day. and I will weigh myself on Saturdays. that way i shouldn't see the effects of having a cheat day on my scale and when i record on here ;) gosh.... I would of been going about this all wrong without you guys! LOVE!!!!! :)

I'm glad you are getting so much from this site. It's wonderful when people immerse themselves in all the site has to give. The bad thing about Slim Fast is that when you start eating normally again you will put weight back on. I tried it early this year and lost about 5 lbs, but I gained about 18 back when I stopped using it because I was hungry. Good luck with the spike. Let us know how it goes!

Eating less than 1200 calories a day can slow your metabolic rate. I'll admit, I'm guilty of having days where I eat less than 1200 calories. But only once in awhile. If I were you, I'd set my bottom range at 1200 calories but no lower. Personally, I rely more on what my calorie deficit is at the end of every day. This way I don't feel guilty if I go slightly over my RDI. If you have a calorie deficit of 500-1000 at the end of every day then you can have a weight loss of 1-2 pounds per week.

Great job M, keep up the research. There's so much information out there and I would encourage you to arm yourself with as much knowledge as you can gain to be successful in your journey! Work smarter... not harder!

I'm glad you realized. First of all, there is no need for us to set us up for potential failure. But it's just as important that you eat enough to be able to actually enjoy life. Where is the fun in constant hard-core dieting? I think it's important that you learn to LIVE your weight loss journey, learn to indulge in moderation, learn to handle outings with friends etc. When measuring, weighing and/or whatever else you do becomes second nature you will stop thinking about it. Sure, friends and family stare a little at first, but once they see your results of doing it, they'll come around asking for the secrets... :) For me, weighing and registering my food in FatSecret before eating is about as natural and a given as putting on pants before going to work. It's just something I have to do. Enjoy the spike days!
