Sandy701's Journal, 04 October 2011

Today was another bright, sunny and cool day, although it was about 70 when I went out walking. 3.1 miles for me and 1 doggy, 2.3 miles for another doggy. The air is nice and comfortably dry - YAY!!!

We're also making the most of utilizing 1 loop for walking that can turn out to be semi-off-limits any day now when the snowbirds return, along with their BIG Akita that one of my dogs greatly fears. As a result, we generally avoid that loop in case the dog is out in the yard (always off-leash). The dog appears to be very well-trained, but I don't chance it especially because my 1 dog is likely to see any "visit" as a threat.

Yesterday was a strange day for me. I had worked this weekend clearing out some larger clothing to donate. A truck was coming by yesterday (Monday). For some reason, I realized that I was almost slightly panicked, seeing my boxes of clothing out at the curb, awaiting pick-up. Now, these weren't my "best" pieces of clothing, as those will probably end up on eBay. But, they were just the run-of-the-mill, basic items, some a bit worn or maybe with a slight flaw somewhere, and yet, there I was, almost ready to run out and clutch those boxes back to my chest! This turned out to be a whole lot more emotional for me than I would have EVER expected!

I've had no problems giving away clothing in the past, but perhaps it was seeing actual spaces left in my closet??? Maybe I'm not as positive as I think I am, really deep down, that I can keep the weight off??? Not sure, but I think I'm OK today.

Also, over the weekend, I wore jeans for the first time since spring. The brand new 14's I bought in April just so I'd have some that fit, if I needed to have them, are now a bit large. In fact, if I were trying them on now in the store, I'd go out and give the 12's a try, as well. I'll keep the 14's because they're comfortable, but if I look for more, I'll check out the 12's. I'm currently wearing 12's and 14's in shorts by the same manufacturer.

I also had to bring out a sweater I've been happily waiting to wear again. Bad/good news...I've grown into it.....and OUT of it! It really does look too big. And...the fleece vests I bought on clearance at the end of winter that were fitted over my rib cage then, are now roomy enough to wear multiple layers underneath. I discovered that when I had them on for the first time in a few months. Again, if I were looking to buy these items now, I'd at least try on the smaller size.

So maybe all these clothing issues, seemingly happening all at once, were just a bit much for me to handle. But you know, if "clothing" is the worst "problem" I have, I should still consider myself very fortunate and blessed.

Oh Sandy, I so understand how you feel, really I do. The emotional side of this journey is a real roller coaster, & some days the ride is way easier to enjoy, other days...not so much! It is very worrisome (sp?), to even think there is even the tiniest hint in the back of our minds that we don't believe the pounds will stay off. When those kind of thoughts bother me, & sometimes, being honest here, they do...I try to tell myself I don't have a crystal ball, I can't tell what the future will bring me. BUT, I do know that for Today & I believe Tomorrow too that my choices are true to my goal of choosing this WOE/WOL. Never mind about the worries, I think we all have those, but embrace the hope of tomorrow. As long as the pounds keep dropping neither of us have any clue what size we will really be next spring/summer so it is hard to resist buying those nice clearance rack finds! Just this morning I "realized" that I missed being able to wear several suit jackets! They are too big - way too big. Initially, I was a bit confused, wondering WHY didn't I wear them...well, cause it was too darn HOT to wear suit jackets in July & August when I was wearing the pants that went with them! Yup...they good news / bad news, I get it! I even get what you mean about what is left in the closet to wear! I am soooooo used to having oodles of clothes/options/combinations as I have been collecting for a long time. But as my body shrinks, so does my wardrobe. Maybe I will be visiting a thrift/resale shop or two.

Sandy if having "clothing too big" is the worst problem you have then you are lucky ! Congratulations on the size 12's, wish I were there I'm happy with 14's now !

Sandy you mention "snowbirds" returing ? Do you live in the southwest ? We are snowbirds who go to Arizona for the winter months so we don't have to shovel snow in Kansas...

GG...That's the way I was with that sweater. I really liked it; it has unusual styling that I like. But it was TOO HOT to even consider wearing it until this last weekend (like your suit jackets) - and then it was too late (sigh). I, too, have quite the clothing collection and a part of me began to mentally add up all the money spent over many, many years, on adding all these clothes in ever-increasing sizes. I had to stop that thinking, as it made me even more stressed/panicked/ashamed, etc. Luckily, I don't HAVE to work on purging any more clothes right now....I can take my time handling what's left.

Notfast....No, they like the Rocky Mountains, so that's where they spend their summers, returning to Florida for the winter, usually sometime in October. And, as for the 12's...I use the 12 shorts for walking because they have a more secure fit, with the style fitting slightly below the waist. The 14's tend to feel like they're sliding down as I walk, although that size is quite comfortable for around-the-house wear!

Before school started I tried everything I own on and purged quite a bit. It was my 18w slacks that were really unwearable. I bought several regular sized 16, the smallest sized pants I have ever worn in my adult life. I am shocked that they are now loose around the waist. They will have to do until they fall off! I am still wearing most of the blouses I had. On a teachers' assistant salary I cannot afford to buy more. I tried some second hand shops like several people have suggested, but never find anything I like. Maybe they are not as good around here. My clothes in general do not last too long. I am hard on them, so I never have any attachment to them. My husband once mentioned that I have the opposite disease of those people on the hoarding shows in tv! I never hang on to things once I realize I do not use them.

Lisa, I could use a bit of that mentality! Some second-hand stores are really great but there are quite a number around here that are just full of junk. At the one where I volunteer, we don't even put out anything that's soiled, stained, or ripped. The items won't be trashed, but we can arrange to get them to other organizations that WILL sell damaged items.
