Penlan's Journal, 28 November 2015

I had to remove all grains from my diet about three years ago as it caused a lot of digestion problems for me. That's ALL grains including maize, rice, the lot; most nuts, seeds and pulses too. So by default my diet is low carb and I don't have a sweet tooth so only eat carbs in fresh fruit and veg. I followed conventional thinking about low fat.

The first thing I noticed was that I no longer had what I had been told were low blood sugar shakes. You know, when you are so hungry you are shaking? In those days I used to eat fruit but the shakes carried on until I ate bread. Once I cut all the grains, in one fell swoop, I never had the shakes. Never. Not even if I didn't eat all day.

Didn't eat all day? That's not good..... well, yes, it's not. The other side effect is that I not only didn't get the shakes I stopped feeling HUNGER in any way. I had to remind myself to eat. The weight dropped off me, and quickly. No bad effects.

But we have all been told to eat plenty carbs and cut fat, haven't we. So instead of upping the fat I tried to eat carbs. The only ones available were starchy veg, potatoes, parsnips and er, cooked carrots?? Not a lot. Crisps - they are starchy right? My weight stalled and even crept up.

In that period of trying to lose the new excess I did the conventional thing, low fat, watch calories, exercise more. All the time I was COLD. Losing weight, slowly, about 12 kilos in the last year, so working. I have to eat a whole avocado every day, and almonds and olive oil to get my calories up to even 1500 a day. I am happy eating fat that way, I don't like meat fat, unless it's marbled in the steak.

I joined FS a few days ago as I wanted to be able easily to analyse my fat/carb/protein balance. It turns out my protein was way down. I'd been curbing my meat and cheese on the low fat approach. So, I added meat and cheese back.

Calories are fine, and my fat is now about 50% of calories. Protein up to around 25%, so better. I can do better, will eat more cheese I suppose.

I am no longer cold. In fact I am running quite hot most of the time. When I eat meat or cheese I get HOT and sweaty It seems I am burning the calories rather than storing them, which does fit in with the low carb theory. All the rest of my food is low GI and low GL. I tried low fat low GI low GL, but I had to eat all the time and was cold.

I have not just to factor weight loss but as I have had stents fitted to my heart I am trying to learn more about heart disease. I have been so indoctrinated in the low fat is good for the heart I have struggled to adopt higher fat, but I think it will suit my body (and soon after I am sure, my head will follow). As triglycerides are the baddies for the heart and they come from carbs it's a no-brainer to cut out carbs :)
