Donna Mashburn's Journal, 20 October 2015

Alright--so, the question is, if you are trying to do a reduced carb diet, not necessarily a low carb diet like some of you, are there any "good" beans? Pintos? Great northern? Chili beans? Beans and ham are a wintertime staple here in the south. Are there any virtuous beans? They seem to fit into my diet idea of nothing "white" (sugar, flour, potatoes).

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Beans are okay in my books. I just wouldn't go refried. Eat the bean whole or in a soup. Anything that's been 'refined' (snob) or has been mashed goes into the blood stream faster than something that is more whole in nature. Don't juice it! (Did I just say that?)

My go to bean is usually black beans or lentils. Great source of protein and I never feel those sugar spikes with these two types. Ham goes great with both of these too.....I have family from the south so I completely get it!

I follow Slow Carb (check out The 4 Hour Body), and the first rule is no "white" food! I eat tons of beans, and pretty much any are okay (not garbanzo). I alternate between black and pinto beans for every day eating (whole), but I make various recipes with kidney and white beans as well. My diet also permits refried beans, but only occasionally.

I totally adore french great beans or runner beans. Fresh from the garden. And why no potatoes? Mine are more yellow?

@Schmetterlinge34--Carbohydrates are my downfall. I have overeaten them for years even when trying to follow a reduced calorie diet, so for me, it has been easier to stop them altogether by leaving off the "white" stuff. (I still haven't cut them completely out, but carbs are a much smaller part of my diet and are coming from a healthier source.) It has made shopping much easier--now I walk through the store saying Nope--nope-can't have that--etc. I haven't missed the stuff either. Now if I want something sweet, I can feel satisfied with just a taste instead of a whole portion. Carbs are ADDICTIVE--the more I eat, the more I want! I haven't had to buy sugar in over 4 months! (And I went through a LOT of sugar.)
