Sandy701's Journal, 03 June 2011

Another hot day today and no walking for me or the dogs. I had a commitment at church this AM and then went on a few errands after that.

DH and I have a retirement dinner tonight. It should be great, although I'm wondering if they'll seat this big group inside or outside. If outside, maybe I'll take along a visor and sneak in some ice packs, as well!! I don't see many of these people very often, and don't know too many very well, but I'm still wondering if anyone will mention my weight loss.

A few days ago, Stef posted a picture of a snake. Then Keli journaled about a large lizard. Well, now it's my turn. When I took the dogs outside for their last time last night, both seemed overly interested in the pool. Well, sure enough, there was a small snake (maybe 8-9")in it. Luckily, DH, who had already gone to bed, was semi-awake so I cajoled him into helping me get rid of it. Of course, we have very limited lighting out there, but we turned on what we had and also the pool's light. We managed to get it out of the pool and send the slithery thing on to its Maker. Still, my heart just pounds from that kind of thing and I can hardly squeeze in any other thoughts for quite awhile. I was afraid I'd end up dreaming about some scary adventure with a snake! So, bedtime was even later than usual for me.

I used to say "live and let live" until my husband was bitten by a copperhead and had a severe reaction. Now I am very wary.

PS - Yes, it is onward and downward. Good decision!

Bren, I can't watch scary movies anywhere close to bedtime, or I'm wide awake for hours!

Buffy, I'm not a conservationist by any stretch...I have my home sprayed for bugs and the lawn too and the dogs get flea preventatives as well. I wouldn't go out of my way to clear the whole outside area of lizards and the snakes that are probably there, even though I don't see them. But I draw the line when they get into "my" space. This was probably one of the harmless ones, as I think I googled it when I killed the first one. I believe I've actually killed 2-3 of these before, over the last 2 years. But I don't take any chances on whether or not it's truly harmless. Did your husband suffer any lasting aftereffects? Can't imagine how scary that was!

He was bitten on the small finger of his right hand (his whole arm turned black). In the end he lost the use of that finger but has learned to adapt over the years. He has a good attitude about it because it could have been much worse.

I don't blame you. I would have done the same thing. Sorry if my lizard story scared you in anyway. And Buffy - that is so terrible. A copper head really? Wow, he's blessed to be here. Those are awful.

Gee Bren it took you months to get over JAWS, I was about 7 when I watched it and I'm still not over it!!! Buffy your husband was very lucky, I am terrified of snakes, and pride myself having lived 31 years in Africa and not being bitten by one :)

Gosh Buffy, how terrible. I think I'd live in a very northern climate after an experience like that! But glad the damage ultimately was much less than it could have been.

Sandy & all - thanks. Sandy - I was just making the point that you can never be too careful.

I'm sure they will notice your weight loss sweetie. If they don't, with the large amount you have lost, then they are all not only retired, but blind as well. Have a wonderful time.:):)

ROFL! Laurie, I'll keep that in mind!

Keli, no the lizard story didn't scare me, but I don't like lizards much, esp. not the larger ones like the one you described. I'm not really sure I've ever seen them that big, except in zoos. When I first lived in the South and saw the little ones outside, I'd get in a panic....heart racing, chills on my arms, etc., even though they're harmless. After several years, I sort of got used to them - maybe. Then the next assignments were in areas without them. Alas....we're now back in Lizard Country. At least I don't have quite the reaction that I used to, so that's good, but I'd still rather see them wa-a-a-y over on someone else's property and not lurking on the bricks right outside the windows and doors to my house.

Triaby, glad to hear you made it through that many years in Africa without being bitten by a snake. Hopefully, you didn't get bitten by anything else nasty????
