I have a question for you meat eaters....I am really, really trying to watch my salt intake. It seems that meat that I get from the store is PACKED with it...but I like adding chicken or diced ham or whatever to my salads and wraps, etc. So my question is this, does anybody know of a "low-sodium" way to achieve this? I thought maybe buying grass-fed chicken tenderloins, making some at the beginning of the week, and just shaving off pieces as needed? Any other ideas? I like my plant-based protein, powders, seeds, Greek yogurt but it's getting old......I want some meat! Lol

I cover chicken breast meat( free range rspca approved chickens) in mustard (4.1g per 100g sodium) 12g on each 14 calories, then bbq it. Or fresh grain fed steak spiced with pepper and smoked paprika also on the bbq.

Thanks! Did you see that link DK posted? It tells you which cuts of steak are naturally lower in sodium....good info for a steak lover!! (love paprika, nom nom!)

Yolanda. Have you heard about vitamin B17? It's in things like apple and apricot seeds. (You have to take it out of the pit, apparently. I thought it was hard to chew.) Apparently the level of arsenic in the seeds is marginal. It has been claimed that 2 weeks of eating apricot seed (no idea of how many) can actually kill a cancer in the body. I stay away from processed foods, but the stuff I'm curing and smoking right now have a fair amount of salt because of the curing process.

^^^I've heard that about apricot seed too. I'd definitely rather try that than chemo. Also bison is a good choice that's low in sodium and almost always grass-fed (can't say I've seen a bison factory farm), however, it's lower fat than beef so you have to cook it at lower temperatures and for a little longer. If you were to throw a couple pounds in the crockpot with some dry black, chipotle chili powder (and a little sea salt - you need the minerals) and some red wine (drinking, not cooking), you'd have a nice low-sodium meal that could last several servings if you stretch it out with vegetables or rice. If you can afford it, get your meat from a nearby ethical farm or farmers' market, or from a reputable online source, like U.S. Wellness Meats.

This is why I stay away from ButterBall. Too much injected sodium. My rule #1: Read the labels.

I looked at my local grocery store's website and the chicken that they sell in packages is hormone, injections free so I'm glad at least I was buying THAT...now to find some good beef and bison, maybe elk...nom nom!

So, I was thinking; since the salt increases blood volume, which increases blood pressure, maybe there was something to those doctors in the dark ages who used to bleed their patients to cure them. Just drain off a pint or so when your blood pressure starts to go up.

Haha....uh, maybe.... ;)

Bleeding is actually prescribed for people who have too much iron in their blood; it's called "therapeutic phlebotomy".

I have to watch my sodium and eat meat. I eat a lot of chicken and on fish or beef days I watch my sodium in other places. Avoid ham or anything smoked. Lean boneless pork chops aren't bad. Salad dressing is loaded, try mashed avocados for dressing. For veggies you can use fresh, frozen, or no salt added canned. You just want to aim for 1500mg.
