Mamadukes6's Journal, 14 April 2021

My sweet lil Mummy passed away Sat. April 3. She was exactly one month shy of her 94 birthday. She had been battling cancer (her 4th go round) for the past 4 years, and simply had a will of iron. A week before she passed, we got the call to come as her time was near. After a 6 hour drive we arrived at her facility expecting to sit by her bedside while she drew her last breath. I caught my breath to steel myself as to what I would see as the elevator doors opened on her floor. We gasped as we recognized her tiny little frame about 50 feet from her room. She was in her wheelchair, pulling herself down the hallway by the left railing along the hall wall - with her ONE good arm. She had literally pulled herself up out of her bed, gotten herself into her wheelchair and used her feet to get her out of her room and into the hallway, and slowly, hand pull by hand pull, was heading down the hall so that she could look out the window. "Not today" she said, "not today". She quietly slipped from this earthly plane a week later, when she was good and ready.

Never have I met a stronger woman. She was 5 feet of grit, will power, optimism, determination and sheer energy that simply wouldn't quit.

Each day since I saw her in that hallway I have thought of her fortitude - and vowed each time I thought I simply couldn't do "whatever" to push a little harder, dig a little deeper, and thank her for showing me the way.

I am so sorry for your loss. You were blessed to have her so long. I lost my dad at 11 and my mom at 22. I always wonder what it’s like to be an adult and still have a mom. Seems so foreign to me. She is no longer in pain and is at peace. Sending you love and peace. Grief is horrible. Give your self time. Lots of time. I also lost both my kids a few years ago. Love the ones god has given to you. Hugs.

Sorry for your loss. You had an opportunity to know someone so strong she could bend the will of the inevitable to comply with her timeline. She can be an incredible role model for you as you can be to others in your world. A will of iron.

Beautiful tribute to your mother. My mother used to say, "nobody will love you like your mother". She passed away last year. What a wonderful legacy your mother left you. ❤

So sorry for your loss - she sounds like an amazing woman. My mom passed just a few months shy of her 95th birthday in 2019 - she was a spitfire in many ways and gave most everyone a lot of grief until the very end, but her fire never dimmed until she took her last breath. I think that determination and vitality is what keeps them going so long. Sounds like much of your mum’s attitude has been passed down to you... continue that legacy!

Just what I needed to hear today. My parents are coming for a visit this weekend and it will be the first time they've left their town since Christmas 2019. I've only seen them twice since then. They are in their 80s and your post has reminded me that I need to treasure every single moment I have left with them - as I should with all my loved ones. As an old preacher once told me, "We're all just here for a season."
