lonniehuffman's Journal, 09 April 2021

It's getting hot in the desert southwest. It got up to 100° F a couple days this past week. I've had to do my walks very early and/or very late in the day to avoid the midday heat. Even more wildflowers have been showing up though, and the sunsets have been spectacular. I thought I'd share a few pictures.

Photo Captions:

1) Here I am sitting outside in the shade of our camper trying to beat the heat. It was 97° F on this day, but quite comfortable in the shade thanks to a nice breeze.

2) I think this is my favorite desert wildflower. It's called a desert five-spot (Eremalche rotundifolia).

3) This ocotillo (Fouquieria splendens) is in bloom. The flowers are the red tips at the top of each branch.

4) One of the biggest things I'll miss when we leave here in a couple weeks will be the sunsets. Avoiding the midday heat means I've been enjoying walks as the sun is setting Here's a recent sunset I enjoyed while walking.

5) Here the sun is setting on my favorite walking trail through the Little Picacho Wilderness.

You have the same energy as my Uncle. He lived in the CA desert, would go Jeeping and RVing across the country, and he was an incredibly talented photographer. He had a great eye for composition (just like you!) and he was so full of knowledge about the natural world. We used to tell ghost stories around a campfire, except his were always firsthand accounts. He was an awesome dude. You two even look a bit alike. =)

Looking good Lonnie! The sunsets are glorious, but my favorite is the desert five-spot. Are you sure you didn't paint it?

Safety is priority #1, jeannieselby. I'm very leery of snakes, so my eyes are always peeled. 👀

You’re giving me Matthew Modine vibes in that pic. You look great, dude. And your other pics: amazing, as usual.
