Johanne's Journal, 16 October 2013

Yesterday was a horrible day. I offended the Dr who did surgery on my hand. The surgery was mostly successful, however, because of the way he sutured the incisions, I have huge, hard lumps in the palm of my hand that are painful when bumped (like, when holding my steering wheel or picking up a glass). I questioned why he did the sutures the way he did and he got extremely defensive and very angry. I left the office almost in tears with none of my questions answered. I got home, only to get a call from the mammography dept at the hospital to let me know they have to do a sonogram on my left breast since they found lumps and need to do more photos of the right breast. In the past, lumps have been cysts, but you never know, so now I'm on tenter hooks. My father died of breast cancer. All-in-all, I was out of control, my eating was out of control and I was on the verge of tears all day. My friend, Ed, is taking me out to lunch today. He makes a good sounding board, so, hopefully, I can pull up and put things in perspective.

Thanks Sue. Bren, my hand is healing at a normal pace. The scars I'm talking about are permanent. He bunched the skin up into big ridges instead of doing internal dissolving stitches with flat surface stitches. I healed too fast before they took the stitches out, so the ridges didn't flatten out the way they expected them to. They're there and they're permanent. My other hand was done 4 years ago, correctly. I have photos of it just prior to the stitches coming out. I have pictures of my hand this time just prior to the stitches coming out. There's no resemblance between the two. I wouldn't worry about the scars, themselves. It's the fact that they're prominent, in the way and they hurt.

Bonnie, could he have been so angry because he knows he screwed up? You shouldn't have to feel bad like that. He is in the customer service business so to speak. I would make another appointment, I would go with someone else, have someone with you for moral support. And then ask your questions and ask him if it would be possible to redo the hand (if you can't live with the bumps and pain) and tell him that it is very painful and makes the hand quite unusable. I am so sorry you are going through this.
