Sandy701's Journal, 22 January 2013

Typical walking yesterday and today...DH along yesterday and doggies along both days. Today is bright and sunny but COLD!

I had a good long talk with DH yesterday about my WOE struggles lately. I found myself realizing that what I want is more food.....more VOLUME. Of course I can add more volume with veggies, which will keep my calories under control, but those veggies also add carbs.....and there's a limit on that for me.

I've been reading a fair amount of material online and found a slightly different take on fiber and net carbs. Basically, the contention was that fiber, while a good thing on many fronts, is still carbohydrate! It doesn't magically cancel out other carbs, as one might think given the fact that you subtract fiber from total carbs to get net....and net is what one looks at when doing the "new" Atkins. Rather, fiber is STILL CARBOHYDRATE....just a slower-acting carbohydrate that has a slower, or reduced, effect on insulin. Depending on one's own metabolism, it's possible that fiber needs to stay included in the net carb total....or perhaps only subtracted at 50%, rather than 100%. (Example: TC = 10g, fiber = 4g, NC = 8g, rather than 6g, as would be the typical calculation.)

I've also read about the many issues of questionable Nutrition Facts labeling on popular so-called low-carb products. Let's just say that if you're considering Dreamfield's pasta, Quest bars, Jullian Bakery breads, etc., goggle the items and do some reading, then decide for yourself. Some people seem to do wonderfully with these products, but others make compelling cases (some even supported by blood testing) that the NFs are not as they appear. I guess these cases make me all the more convinced that if it seems too good to be true, it probably is!

Another case in point....the Mission Carb Balance flour tortillas. These are REALLY good! They're DH's favorite, but I'm not convinced they're as good as the label indicates. These tortillas show 19g TC and 13g fiber in just 1 medium tortilla. The tortillas look a LOT like typical flour tortillas and don't really appear like they would have 13g of fiber.

The Tumaro's brand has 7g fiber (11g TC) in the same size tortilla and they LOOK like they have fiber in them....taste like it too. I'd say the same for the Tam-X-Ico's brand and for La Tortilla Factory's as well. With almost DOUBLE the fiber of these brands, those Mission tortillas ought to look chock-full of fiber, but they don't.

I'm sure I'll have the Mission variety from time to time because DH wants them on hand, but I'll always be suspicious of them if my weight stalls a bit, or if I get a little sleepy after a meal with them.

With labeling issues on popular low-carb products PLUS the revelation that one might not be able to subtract ALL the sugar alcohols in a product, I'm more convinced than ever that one can't completely ignore TOTAL carbs, no matter what version of Atkins, or other low-carb WOE, one follows.

Great journal Sandy...and funny you should journal about it. I just wrote (either in my journal or in a thread) that I had the low carb mission tortilla last night and I always know when I do that my loss will be small in comparison to a day that I did not have it. I use them to make chips with too, but like you said I have them sparingly so as not to stall myself out.

They ARE good, no doubt about that, Jaime. Good thing you're watching your reactions to them! Have a great week.

Sandy, I have come to the same conclusion. I use the Tumaro's when I use the tortillas, and I use La Tiara mini taco shells. They have 4 grams of carbs per shell, but if I budget for them, I can have one "real" mini taco with my taco salad! And they are corn, so no wheat gluten. I tried the Julian Bakery coconut flour bread...and if taste and texture are any indication, it has plenty of fiber. I am not a big fan unless it is toasted. I have been contemplating toasting it all up, putting it in the blender, and making bread crumbs for frying chicken and fish. I am still looking for a decent breading after 3 years of this. Hope you have an awesome day! HUGS!

Stef, those mini taco shells sound interesting....I'll have to keep an eye out for them. I had a recipe for baby corn bread that was supposed to be good enough to use as a breading, or coating. But when I made up the bread, it was far too wet/moist to use for that. Hope you're feeling better.

Sandy, I get them at WalMart. I prefer the white corn ones. They come in a box of 8. Hubby loves them as well, and they are just enough for me to get a sense of eating a "real" taco! I am feeling better every day, but it is so slow...getting tired of it! :)

That sounds like one stubborn, nasty bug....please keep him in Missouri....or send him to Canada...just don't send him south! :)

Hey Sandy, I think you could be on the right track in your total carb thinking. It is so frustrating when one thing works for somebody but others not so much. Maybe it all gets down to what stage the person is at...OWL, Pre-Maint. or Maint. Personally speaking, having a "low carb" tortilla or serving of dreamfields once in a while is OK, I can manage that. Now, I suspect if I were to have a LC tortilla on Monday, followed by dreamfields or Tuesday, followed by healthy living low carb bread on Wednesday things would be different. But, I try NOT to do that. You know, for me that volume thing is a huge deal. I need to feel full & that is hard for me to do @ 1600 with 50 NC per day, I know I would be feeling pretty sorry for myself attempting 1200-1300, I think then the NC would come down naturally, but I would be a hungry girl!

GG, this calorie/TC/NC balance is about driving me nuts!! But I've got to find my way through this, somehow. Somehow, some way, I was able to keep my weight in the 135-145 range for years, back in the day, without any special effort or monitoring. Of course, I've had MANY years WAY off that range, plus being older, so who knows if I can find that nice equilibrium, that sweet spot, where I can eat comfortably on plan but relax a bit on the super-close monitoring. I'll probably get it all figured out the day before I die - LOL!

I really enjoyed your journal today. I remember reading an article not to long ago on Dreamfields and how testers could not repeat the results that the manufacturer claimed. I had always wondered about it because it is basically white flour - so was never tempted to try it. On that other subject - I am very fortunate that I seem to be able to "get rid" of fiber before any of it gets digested as a carb. I suspect that it all boils down to the fact that our bodies are as individual as our personalities.

PS - love that last comment of yours - finding the sweet spot! Where there is a will there is a way. We'll do this Sandy.

Sweet spot, we are all looking for it, probably don't know we are in it while we are actually in it, until we are out of it...LOL...that is just the way it goes. I hate that you are struggling, but in my heart know that you will find a sweet spot you Can Live With For a LONG TIME!

Buffy, I'm SO much looking for the "if your body is doing THIS, then you need to adjust THAT..." but I don't think I'll find it. What makes our bodies so perfect for life - the ability to handle all kinds of foods in all ranges of calories - also make those bodies so frustrating when we try to make it do what WE want it to. Some days, it's just a AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH day!

GG, I've been having many, little pep talks with myself about these struggles....mostly to just calm down and do what I know works. My "hunger" is not really hunger in the starvation sense (still have plenty to eat and lots of fat still stuck on the bod), so I ought to be able to deal with it! In the great grand scheme of things, this minor discomfort is trivial.
