FullaBella's Journal, 26 December 2012

Merry Day after Christmas all. My turtleneck sweater has a 'Santa' on the collar but it's the only turtleneck I have and it's freaking cold here today so if anyone gives me grief about it I'll make them take down the Christmas decorations for me.

I'm out in the store but will probably do little more than charge my MP3 and look for some more treadmill music. We had SNOW here on Christmas and that's rare around these parts. The normal part is what remained: ICE. So very little traffic with all the other businesses closed. But I'm here. Showing up is 90%, right?

I didn't get my treadmill walk in this morning. I tried. Twice. My back is hurting really bad so even 3-5 mins slow walking and stretching the first time, followed by pain medicine and coffee and repeat a second attempt failed.

I'm not sure if it's the cold weather affecting the arthritis in my spine, age, or referral pain. I'm sure all of those are old wives tales but I'm an old wife.

For two days my right arm has been ACHING and in the past when I've had pain in my shoulders or neck it always seemed to travel and settle into my lower back. So this morning my arm isn't hurting but low back (is).

I didn't post my treadmill habit forming journal but for all of those community members waiting breathlessly for an update I DID do my walks yesterday, morning and evening. I have noticed I'm holding 3.5mph very well but start stumbling at 3.8 or 4.0; just can't move myself that fast comfortably yet and am not about to put a bouncing stress on my 'back' by jogging until I get more off my 'front'.

So I increased the incline on the machine to 3.0 for most of my walk and 'that' could also be contributing to my soreness. Probably a whole different set of muscles utilized.

So in trade off of my treadmill missed, I did my own sidewalk /street sanding this morning. In the past I called someone else to do it. Remember my journal about the 5lb weights? Nothing like lifting a half bag of sand (30lbs) to drive home the reality of what that extra weight feels like and I've lost twice much. I doubt if I'd have been able to pick up a 60lb bag of sand though. I'm a wimp and my back hurts.

God Bless MH ~ This morning when I didn't make my treadmill I felt like a failure. His response was 'no sense doing something that trivial when you're in pain.' He's such a sensible guy. I probably deliberated even BUYING a treadmill nearly three months because I was so concerned with it being a "Monument to Failure" if I didn't stick with it.

His response was 'So WHAT if you don't get on it every day. It's there waiting when you're ready to do it.'

What a guy, huh? I tried to go back with a second round of the 'Yeah, but's' by voicing 'Yeah, but I feel bad about the money. I was thinking I'd probably do better on a cycle in the morning when my back is hurting but don't want to spend that much money on a second piece of equipment this early.'

And this is the part that, when thing are tough and the TV is cranking loud enough to hear it in the next county and he's having a steriod (for his breathing issues) induced mood swing that sends all others running for the hills.. this is the part that helps me find the compassion - his response:

'Jeezus... would you knock it off! Look at the money we've spent on my equipment ~ if you want a @#$# bike, get one!'

He's right too. If I added up the cost of his equipment and monthly RX's, yeah, an exercise bike pales in comparison. I just never remember to think of myself in those terms; I'm sure glad he does. He's a good guy.

So I may start looking at those. I feel like that is something I could do in the mornings when I can barely walk.

Right now, I need a bigger space heater. I'm freezing in the shop! Maybe I need to put the exercise bike in HERE!

Well, I guess I'll end this now before I start rambling (( HAHAHA ... tooo late! )))

Thanks for reading!

I bought a bike (second hand) as an early Christmas present for myself - it allows me to read while moving - something I could never do while walking! I like it!

Been looking at 'em online most of the afternoon ...any opinions on 'recumbent '? I like the full seat and back support....

Mine is similar to a regular bike so that I can transition to an actual bicycle this spring. The recumbent versions look far more comfortable and both provide what you and I are after - calorie burn! With your back, I would definitely lean toward the recumbent; it will put the work into your legs with having to "perch" on the upright bike's seat.

Thank you - I was thinking the same :-) I have too much seat for a regular bike seat :-)
