momma6224's Journal, 26 June 2018

For those who might not know me...I started seriously working on losing weight in January 2018. I’ve lost over 30 lbs since then and reached my goal of 125 last week eating low carb high fat. I started going to the gym in May but had been doing elliptical and some strength exercises at home since January.
Since May (and starting at the gym) my hair has been falling out like crazy. I had fairly thick hair so I wasn’t too worried but it’s not thick anymore and I’m starting to wonder when this will stop or what I can do to help it. I haven’t done extreme calorie restriction or anything (average daily is 1350-1500) so what is going on? I take vitamins and electrolytes. I don’t want all my hair to fall out! 😬 any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions! From all I’ve read, I’m fairly certain my normal hair cycle has been thrown out of whack from the diet and weight loss. I’ll check with my dr soon and hope it stops before my hair gets too thin!

Hear this all the time from women cutting weight. Check out the female fitness competitor forums for exhaustive coverage.

I experienced thinning hair too, during and after my weight loss (140 lbs over 1.5 years). Like you, I didn't do massive calorie restriction, and I was always getting plenty of nutrients from whole foods, so I didn't understand it. I talked to a couple doctors about it and heard that it's relatively normal for your body to de-prioritize your hair growth when you lose a lot of weight, even if you lose weight safely/slowly. They said that your body will protectively focus it's energy on your vital functions, which means that your hair may not grow for a couple cycles (hair grows and sheds in cycles). So when your hair continues to shed normally without growing in new hair, the net loss becomes noticeable. For me, my hair started growing in again after about 6 months at my new weight. I took biotin & silica supplements for a few months which probably helped. But to be honest, even now (years later) my hair is still thinner than it was before my weight loss.

Thanks jimmie and SDW! Good to know it’s not uncommon and should stop after a bit. I was hoping others had similar experiences and could tell me it will be alright🙂

I have lost a lot of hair too. Not super thrilled about it. I just started taking a daily vitamin, hoping it helps.

I am a stylist, hair loss is normal when you lose weight. It will come back when your weight levels off. Try not to stress to much about it , I know it’s scary but it will pass.👍 Everyone keep up the good work!!

Mine shed really bad when I was around my smallest. Settled down after a few months. Eased up on styling and cut back on washing. 😀

Me too! I now take Hair Skin and Nails Supplement and use Rogaine. I also use a red laser cap, they really do work.

Is there any way you could mix the diet up a bit to introduce carbs a bit? I don't want to spark any debates on here I'm just giving my personal opinion carbs are very important in our bodies functioning and processing and I personally do not believe in having unbelievably low amounts like some diets dictate, I do believe very very low levels could be dangerous (just my opinion) now I do agree people need to be aware of their card intake and possibly lower their own as its easy to go over without realising but too low is not good.. Might be worth a try maybe even for a week?

Firts go to the Doc, if he said is normal, try to take Collagen is good for everything internal and external 😉😉

Thanks megan! My hair actually grew longer and thicker for the first 4 months of dieting but has been shedding quite a bit the past two months. Everything I’ve read tells me this can be normal with weight loss but I will check with my dr. I actually have added more carbs the last month...I probably need to improve the quality of those carbs though haha!

Ahhh ok see best thing is kind of trial and error really which yeah hair loss can be completely normal with lots of weight loss but for peace of mind I'd see a gp at least then you won't be adding stress to the equation, stress can (well from my experience anyway 😂) slow weight loss and your on a roll ☺

I didn’t read all comments. Just wanted to say - I used to be on low carb and have same problem with the hair. Changed my diet- adding 80-100g of slow release carbs daily sorted out in 3 weeks!
