GlennM's Journal, 24 April 2010

Recently I recommended elderberry cough syrup for allergy and other persistent coughs. Well, it worked, but I had an unusual side effect and it was that I was not able to sleep at night even when I was off the night shift schedule. I'm back to normal now, so if anyone tried the cough syrup and is having trouble sleeping - beware of that stuff. It is SUPPOSED to have no side effects - right... Anyway, sadly a fourth neighbor passed - that is how many have passed away in the past month, she was 94 and in a nursing home. (There are 191 apartments rented out in my building so I have lots of neighbors, this particular one lived across the hall for my first ten years here or so...). A schoolmate of mine, who I went to school with all through those years passed away felling a tree he was my age of course, my grade through school, still lived in his hometown and was on his family's property in the Berkshires, it was in the morning paper today on the front page. I haven't seen him since high school as I haven't been to any reunions. The dieting is going well. I had severe back pain at work this evening, but will be OK. I am forcing myself to walk whenever the weather is nice outside, went out not too far - maybe a mile - Friday evening. A fantastic bike path was completed last fall and connects to an older one nearby, I can ride my bike on it or walk on it to a nearby grocery store a mile away and avoid streets with too much car traffic now - it's great...

Hey Glenn, how are ya doing buddy? I am becoming an advocate for this walking. I have just started since the doc put a shot of cortizone in the knee. With almost no pain now I CAN walk and am totaling about 50 minutes a day (10-15 in AM and about 40 in the evening). Glenn, since I started I have dropped (a few ounces) everyday! This must be the key for me. I never enjoyed exercise but the walking doesn't feel like exercise. How is the issue with your neighbor going? What are you doing about the cough syrup, have you changed to something else? How about whiskey & lemon or whiskey & honey :-) Really, heard it works. Sounds good anyway. Have a wonderful weekend and if weather permits get outside into the good ole sunshine and collect your Vitamin D! Be well my friend.

It was supposed to rain the past three days and didn't and they kept changing the forecast over and over so I'll believe it's going to rain when it gets here. Sometimes they're just wrong, and they said it was going to be cool all week and it has been mild too. They keep changing it - the western MA weather people are terrible, the CT ones are more accurate. My allergies are fine right now by the way with a 2X a day nasal rinse. I'm walking regualarly and can go to the gym too if it does rain too much if I have to and get on a treadmill. I do like whiskey and honey or rum and honey, I cook off the alcohol. It is really good if one has a sore throat, I don't now... I'm going to sleep now - I was up all day but plan to walk this evening hopefully and WILL hit the gym if it rains this week. NOTHING will stop me now except if my back is in bad shape, but even then I can take pain pills... :)

Wow! That is a lot of neighbors. Now I understand things a little better. Sorry to hear of your friends accident, it illustrates to us what a careless moment can mean. Like you, I am trying to push myself a little more. I hope your back feels better buddy! Have a good week.

Yes info - I have lots of neighbors - so things can get a bit stressful around here. It doesn't help when one down the hall she leaves her door open with the TV blasting and everyone screaming in there. Somebody is always/needs to be in detox in this building too. It is a bit chaotic to say the least. I'm anxious to move and am going to as soon as I can. It's an OK place really, but too many people with too much nonsense going on, like over a dozen people with others in their places shacking up with them for a start. But I will move as soon as I can... Anyway if it doesn't rain tomorrow I will go for a long walk, the latter part of the week looks nice so I will be walking for exercise daily on the bike path probably. I may go to a low calorie diet in the coming weeks...

No wonder you want to move, what a bunch of crap you have to put up with. I don't blame you for wanting out. At least walking gets you away from them for a while. How can you concentrate enough to write!? Be patient, your turn is coming. Speaking of rain, we had a torrent last night and today. Bad, bad rain, wind and tornado watch too. Turned out OK by this evening and I got in the nightly walk I am now taking. Hope this finds you feeling better. You surely do need to move if only for your sanity. Be well Glenn and talk to you later.
