After years of abusing my body with processed foods and junk, I am now hypoglycemic. I also have polycystic ovarian syndrome which I have had since puberty. They symtoms of this increase as my weight increases. Last year I started Metformin but made no dietary changes except for eating breakfast (if you can call a blueberry muffins from Tim Hortons breakfast) and I lost about 20 pounds. Last week I met with a dietician who recommended the GI diet for me to help me shed the pounds and get the blood sugar under control. That in turn should help control the symptoms of PCOS.

So here I am. I bought the GI book and have been filling my head with ideas on how I am going to take this on. I have been terrible my entire life with meal planning which is going to be so important to making this work. I think that planning meals will be my biggest challenge. In the last year I think I might have brought my lunch to work 3 times. It will be very difficult to start these new habits.

I hope this forum will help to keep me focused on the little gradual changes that I need to make. It is time to do this. My body won't wait any longer.

So yesterday and today were pretty eye opening in terms of the foods I am eating. I ate regular foods on these days and recorded them and it was shocking to see how little protein and how much fat I consume. The carbs are low but they are refined icky carbs. My diet needs an entire overhaul. No wonder I am hungary all the time, I eat a diet based on FAT!!!! Fat can't be very filling or good for me.

I am still working away on my meal plan for next week. It is going to take a whole lot of disipline for me to track my meals and plan. Besides I have to take my blood sugar one hour before eating and two hours after eating for my 3 main meals. I also have to have 3 snacks. I am allowed 45 gms of good carbs per meal and 15gms of good carbs per snack...but I have to have a protein with all of it.

If I can do this for a week, I can do it forever.
