I am 47 year old Computer Engineer. I have been as heavy as 305 pounds at one point during my 20s. In those days I used to power lift in the Gym 4 days a week an average of 3 hours solid and was eating 5000-6000 calories a day.
Since 18 the lightest I have been was 191 pounds in 1994, by 2006 I was back up to 240.
In 2009 I was at 278 pounds, I visited England for a week, during my visit I noticed how portions are about 1/3 of the size of portions in the United States. I also noticed how physically active the British were compared to Americans. I decided it was time to shed the weight, specially since my feet were killing me at the end of my 10 hour days standing the entire time.
I am determined to hit 180 pounds by age 50, no 2 ways about it. I want to lose weight so I can remain as healthy as possible for my young children. My youngest will turn 5 in July and the last thing I want for him is an old broken fat father by the time he is 18!

recumbent exercise bike
We lose fat from the outside in. The last place we lose fat is our middle section.
There is no such thing as spot loss.
Burning 900 Calories a day on a recumbent bike when you are not fit is asking for trouble in my opinion.
You would do much better varying your activities, the last thing you want is to burn out and go back to square one. Even worse gain weight!
After years of triumphs and failures I have discoverd slow deliberate weight loss is the only way to make it stick.
Take your time and don't burn out. Smile

Finding this hard...
Quote:
They say 3500 cal = 1lb of fat loss but i say that is not always the case on the scale

You are so right. I have been as much as 5000 deficient in a week and not lost an ounce. Yet at times I have been less than 3000 deficient in a week and lost 5 pounds.
Over the last 2 and a half years I have lost 78 pounds. I can tell you I have not yet figured a way to average it out.
I find that keeping the diet simple and not relying on any particular system (Atkins or whatever) but using your own is best.
Planing the day before and sticking to the plan is the only way to succeed.
Take your time and let it be a gradual weight loss so you don't sag and look even worse!
Just because you are dieting it does not mean you can't enjoy all foods.

New here and looking for diet buddies
Enjoy dieting, don't let it be a stressful thing. It can actually be a lot of fun. Take your time and don't rush it.
Sudden weight loss never sticks, people always seem to regain it all plus some Sad
In my opinion anymore than 1 pound a week for a man and half a pound for a woman in weight loss is too drastic and very hard on the body.
Know what you are going to eat the day before, plan it if you can, and stick to it.
You will have success.
Even at a fast food place you can get food that would work with your diet. I bought 3 Grilled Chicken Patties from Burger King for lunch. Had them with Mustard and really enjoyed them.
