I was never overweight as a child or young adult. I started slowly gaining weight in my late 20's. My weight really ballooned in my mid 30's.

I am now trying to find a healthy balance in my life that will allow me to get to my goal weight without feeling like I'm dieting. Overall trying to make small goals that don't directly focus on weight loss that will promote healthy lifestyle changes.

I'm learning that the weight is really a reflection on my outlook on life.

1500 calories
I have a bunch of recipes. Fish tacos are good...instead of a tortilla you can have the fish and salsa over 1/2 to 1/4 cup of brown rice. I like my fish with a little bit of some type of fruit salsa (mango/peach...or I take grapefruit and add some chili powder and diced jalepeno.) Ground chicken/turkey breast burgers are also good. Just eat 1/2 the bun. I even put 1tbs of reduced fat mayo on it.

Mostly I've just been trying to keep my meals to 250 to 300 calories each. I make my main dish account for about 200ish calories, then I fill the rest in with veggies...a salad, or steamed broccoli or spinach.

Hope this gives you a few ideas. Let us know what you come up with

Share your tips for getting the water in!
I agree that one can overdo water consumption and too much can be fatal. However, I don't agree that the average person isn't dehydrated. I know that I am at risk of dehydration even though I am the average person you describe above. Why? Because I never feel thirsty. I can go all day with nothing to drink and not even notice. Sure, I can't think straight and when I actually have to urinate (maybe 1 time per day) it looks like watered down coffee, but if I'm really busy at work, I tend to ignore these symptoms. Therefore, I have to force myself to drink my water quota daily (I go by the 1/2 of body weight in oz) or suffer the health consequences.

Need to lose this weight asap!
I'm 38 and I can totally relate to your feelings...old creaky and just feeling crappy. I was thinking that it was time to put me out to pasture. So I joined a fitness challenge at my gym. The best think I ever did. For the last 8 weeks I've been working out at the gym a little every day doing a variety of things like yoga, kickboxing, weight lifting, running etc. Just a little bit of everything. I have lost some weight...but I am so much stronger and fitter now that I would have been with diet alone. Plus the focus on fitness rather than the scale has really helped me take my mind off of dieting and focus it on improving myself.

I can't say enough good things about exercising and doing a large variety of activities. It might just be the thing you need to keep the "old lady" feelings at bay.

Bikram Yoga
I haven't done Bikram yoga but I have practiced other forms for a couple years at a time. I noticed more overall strength and much improved flexibility.
