Despite office Christmas party and a lot more alcohol intake than usual, I've not gained any weight last week - surprising and a relief. :)

I'm quite happy with how things have been going and the lowest I have weighed this year so far. Still a long way to go but there's no rush. :)

Wow, it's been ages.
I'd like to give FS another try. Over the last 10 months I've been struggling to make any progress because I didn't have a clear strategy really.
Thanks to a local workshop, I've realised properly that what I need is a lifestyle change, not a diet. I know it's quite an obvious thing, but it's still something that takes a long time to truly understand.
Diets are quick, and easy in comparison. But for the last two months I have been focussing on my health, rather than my weight. And though this is the longer, more difficult route, I think it's the only thing that works long term.
An extensive health check was an eye opener. While I do not yet have any problems relating to my heart or lungs, I am definitely at risk due to my obesity (don't you just hate that word?). But it's also quality of life and mental health.
So instead of a diet and calory counting, I have been cutting down on food that is high in fat / sugar / salt. Simultaneously I have started exercising regularly.
You need to attack both issues: Physical activity and eating habits. Only one is not enough. But, I do it in small steps. Whereas before I would try to go from 0 to 100, I really feel that my attitude has changed. Slow and steady is the way to achieve lasting change.
I have been educating myself on the "Eatwell plate", and adding more healthy foods to my everyday food intake. I currently go swimming once a week. This will increase. All in good time.
I hope to post more soon. Hopefully I will find buddies here to do the journey together.

It's been three weeks since my boyfriend and I joined the gym. We have been going 3 times in two of those weeks, 2 times in one of them (to be fair, it was "that time of the month" and surprised I went at all that week). Another couple of weeks and I think it will have become a habit, and start to get easier. It's great to do this together. It took me so long to convince him to go - he really didn't want to and we had a couple of fierce arguments! And now he is more dedicated than I am! It's also bringing out our competitive sides, which is good motivation. I do feel it is a great bonding experience. We both feel better about ourselves for being active and exercising instead of watching telly or playing computer games every night... And as a result our relationship is improving as well.
I would recommend everyone who has a partner to find a type of exercise to do together - whether it's going to the gym or dance classes or running - it's the best thing that we've done in our relationship and it is also SO much easier than if I went off to the gym on my own! Some gym nights I'm tired from work and don't feel like going - then I see my boyfriend put on his gym clothes, and with a sigh I make myself get up and get ready.
My body hasn't changed dramatically yet, but knowimg that it will if I keep at it keeps me going.

Even though I'm the same weight I was last Saturday, I am quite pleased, because earlier this week my weight went UP again for no apparent reason (did workout, did not eat too much)... so I thought it best to wait for my Saturday weigh-in and not worry about it. I was actually surprised to be at the same weight I was last Saturday, was afraid it would be more! :)
Again I will stress... most important for me is to get into the habit of going to the gym three times a week, that is the TOP priority, and so far I have gone twice this week and will again tomorrow. It seems to go really well so I don't want to spoil this achievement by being overly concerned about my weight fluctuating. Once I progress on the workout-front I know the weight loss will follow.
