A little bit of a drop this morning. At least I am consistently below 270 now. It’s not an easy journey because I am so accustomed to eating without discretion. I know that I can take the weight off; I am too strong-willed to be beaten by something once I put my mind to it. The real challenge is to develop the mindset that this is the “New Norm” and not just a means to an end. Once I have truly accepted that my new norm is approximately 1500 calories a day of nutritious food, then I will be able to call it a true lifestyle change. I think that a major reason we fail in this journey is that we have it in the back of our mind that once we have achieved some goal, then we can relax and have what we really want. Until the healthy alternative becomes what we really want, we will always feel that we are depriving ourselves; and as long as we feel that we are depriving ourselves, and sacrificing the pleasure of indulgence temporarily, our journey will always be temporary. This time I am on a journey to a permanent lifestyle change. Make sense?

Apparently FatSecret has changed how you post pictures, and what pictures you are allowed to post. This site used to be almost like social media. I posted things other than food. You used to enter the HTML code for the location of the image from your website, or one of the other picture hosting sites. I don’t care much for the Ipad app, and the picture upload window asks me to pick image size, but doesn’t allow me do anything if I do select an image size. I’m surprised that capabilities have actually decreased in the last five years. Does the search feature for the forums work well for you guys? I don’t have any luck with it, We requested years ago that buddies could be sorted by the time they were last online, but that hasn’t happened either. I love the site, but I am surprised that some features have become even less intuitive than they were before. I guess I’m just a little frustrated; I tried to post a picture of a dish I fixed, based on one someone else posted, and FatSecret automatically posted the nutritional information for a meal that was totally unrelated. So, obviously I deleted it. :(

Last night, my wife begged me to take her out to eat fish. I am almost paranoid about going out to eat - not because of Covid,, but because it is such a challenge to stay on anything that resembles a diet. She loves anything deep fried, so she is always going for the batter fried fillets. The best I could find on the menu was grilled cod, broccoli, and mashed potatoes. The grilled cod was delicious. I ate about half the broccoli and brought the rest home to the dog (believe it or not, he loves broccoli). I probably ate 1/4 of the mashed potatoes with a little butter on them. It’s not that I wouldn’t have eaten everything; it’s just that I was stuffed. I think I made pretty good choices in lieu of all the specials that were on the menu. I had a chef salad earlier in the day and ate all the meat and eggs off of it, and left most of the rabbit food. What can I say; I am a carnivore! I am calling the day a success.

It is always so cool when we start back up and get that initial drop, but I’ve noticed that as I get older that initial drop gets smaller, and the plateaus hit sooner. That is the danger zone: it is in this area that the weight loss seems to be stalled, but I know from experience that it is here that the cravings will escalate exponentially. However, I have also learned that it is at this time, if I will maintain what I am doing, I will see another drop. Has anybody else learned this the hard way? I have caved in, saw the drop the next day, and wondered how well it would have gone if I had just stayed the course. Well, I am staying the course this time.

One other thing I find it helpful to remember is that it takes a 3500 calorie deficit to lose one pound, regardless of the type of diet you are on. Some may burn 3500 calories faster or slower than others. In my case, I know for certain that FatSecret has always been too generous with how many calories I am allowed to eat, so this time I have set my own RDI at 1500. I will exercise more as the weight comes off. I am amazed at how blessed I am to be in such good health and shape for being almost 80 pounds overweight. I know that won’t last if I continue on the course I have been on. Just the ramblings of someone looking to cement a lifestyle change. Have a great and blessed day, Everyone!
