As a chronic migraine sufferer, one of my biggest challenges in dieting is my head and managing my pain. I’m also not trying to trigger a migraine with certain kinds of food or additives.
I’m super sensitive to artificial sweeteners. Especially Aspartame and Acesulfame Potassium, the two most frequently used artificial sweeteners in American “diet” foods.
I know to look for it. This morning I grabbed my Jenny Craig®️ Dream Shake without thinking and took a sip. I think the fact that it was too tasty made me pause and check the ingredients. Sure enough it had Acesulfame Potassium in it. I stopped drinking it immediately.
I will now have to check all the “sweet” foods, and I’m going to ask for a list of the products that have Aspartame and/or Acesulfame Potassium in them. If it’s significant, I may have to stop Jenny Craig and switch to a program I already know doesn’t predominantly use them. I’m not a fan of that other program, but I’m less likely to develop a migraine.

Oh joy. Hopefully it’s just the shakes.

This morning was rough. I went to bed on time last night, but my poor husband tossed and turned and the cats got in the bedroom (we all know that cats won’t let you sleep if they want something). Because of all that I didn’t get a good night’s rest. I am super groggy. I have a low-level migraine. I am a Chronic Migraineur, and therefore I am used to them. My first inclination is to have a cola. It has sugar, caffeine and that instant buzz that tickles your taste buds and wakes you up.
I haven’t had a cola all week. I was doing fine up until today. I almost caved. Instead I chose to have a shot glass worth of cranberry juice to get the sugar rush. Was it fantastic like a cola? No, but it helped curb the craving. I’ll get my caffeine soon enough, once my Excedrin kicks in and my stomach metabolizes my first cup of green tea.
I am doing SO well, given the week I had. Loads of stress at work, packing up the house for a big move and then I had a personal upset hit me hard, which I could have easily found comfort in food for. However, I persevered and lost 7.2 lbs., and it’s not even Saturday, which means I could lose even more.
I am trying to stay positive. I use these thoughts to keep me motivated during certain moments of struggle:
- In two weeks, I’ll feel it; in four weeks I’ll see it, and in eight weeks I’ll hear it (meaning people will start to see the change).
- One year from now I’ll wish I started today.
- Healthy is joy.
- Losing weight is HARD. Being fat is HARDER. Pick your hard.
- When I feel like quitting, think about why I started.
- A goal without a plan is just a wish -- I have a goal and a plan.
- I can suffer the pain of discipline or suffer the pain of regret.
- Champions keep playing until they get it right. -- Billie Jean King
- I am stronger than I think.
- Remember: food is fuel, not therapy.
- Defeat your enemies with success.
- Sometimes you have to walk away and let Karma take over.
- Just take it 5 lbs. at a time.
