Hello Happy People!

How was your weekend? For those who honor it, are you ready for Halloween? I’m not sure what the tradition is around here, but I don’t pass out candy so I’m gonna have to leave my light off. It’s been awhile since I’ve done this. Mostly because I didn’t have control over the light outside my door where I used to live. This place is crawling with cute little kids and I don’t want to even get into the whole “Trick or treat” thing. So, lights out.

Eureka! It worked! Karen and I went over to the little gym here in my complex to work out this morning. She had suggested that I give the treadmill there a try. It would be a great answer to our walking issues during the winter if I could keep up with it. And oh Happy Day, I was able to use it without any issues. No sliding off the back and landing on my tushy. We started off very slowly…I mean veerry sloowlly. And finally made it up to what I considered a slow but steady walking pace for me, about 1.5. I did 15 mins to work up to that and then when I was confident I wouldn’t break my neck, I did another 15 mins. The machine adds a two mins cool down so it turns out i did 34 mins on the treadmill. Whoa hoa! Problem solved. This machine was very different from the ones I tried to use years ago. And I do believe not having to “look” at the belt and my feet while walking helped allot. At one point, I actually started to walk faster than the belt and was walking up the front of the machine. So we’ve set a schedule for treadmilling it at least twice a week and weight training once a week at my little gym. We’ll have yoga on Tuesdays and then she’s free to work out at her new gym, too.

I, for my part, can try some different things on days we don’t go to the little gym. I just found out a bout a website that sells Audio work out tapes for the blind. The instructor is blind and has adapted workouts with full instruction so I can follow along. They have aerobics, strength training and pilates, too. She seems to have a few levels and they are adding as they go. That’s what I like, variety. And of course I still love my dumbbells. I found my jump rope hiding in a box and my blow up Bean. So I think I’m good to go this winter. Oh yeah, and the recumbent bike, too. Hmmm, wonder if I could find a used Thigh Master somewhere…?

Tomorrow is weigh in. and I swear if I havent’ lost these last three pounds to get to earrings… I mean my first weight goal, I’m gonna scream. This is week ten of the weight loss management program. I’ve got two more weeks to go and it’s done. Back to surgery track and I want those 3.8 pesky pounds gone.

Alright, enough complaining. I’ve got a meal plan to work out. Oh yes, still working on that twenty min meal time. It all depends on what I’m eating, ya know. Oh well, something always to strive for. Blessings.

Hey all,

Hope everyone is well and happy. We finally got to our first yoga class yesterday. It was and wasn’t what I expected. There was an element of meditation about the class which felt nice. I haven’t been doing my meditation practice for a long time now and it was nice to get a little of that back. I wasn’t expecting that.

I did expect the pain and discomfort I felt though. I know I’ve got some tight muscle structures. It’s usually in my neck, upper and lower shoulder area, but lately since I’ve been walking, I noticed that my hip flexors are throbbing after about 15 mins of walking. Well, the right hip decided to act up yesterday. Most of the moves I could do. Had a problem with the one where you kind of “sit” on the wall (lying on the floor with legs up along the wall). Couldn’t quite get my bottom up against that wall flush. Got to work on that one. In class, we joked about the “Downward facing dog” position. I had never seen this one before (when I could see) and I told our instructor that it didn’t sound all that easy. She said it actually is an demonstrated for my sister who described it for me. I laughed and said “oh, I call that position “try to get up off the floor”. And sure enough when class was over that was the position I eventually got into just before standing upright. It was a great class and we laughed allot. It’s a very very beginner class which is such a good thing.

Went walking today at Karen’s gym. She officially joined today. We still are working off our week long free passes, but I’m afraid mine ends tomorrow. It’s weight training day. I actually like the gym. If I were in a position to join right now, I would. Their walking track is pretty good and I love the machines they have upstairs on the second floor. It’s a little more private and cozy up there. Most of the women work out up there. I’ve got a few things to pay off first like my livingroom furniture and my storage rack (only got one more payment on that one). I’m actually looking into the whole Silver Sneakers thing and trying to see if a disabled person can qualify. If I can then I can use that membership until I get the furniture paid off (in about two years). Then I could join. I need to find us another walking track though. I’m going to look into a Planet Fitness near us and see what their track is like. I might be able to squeeze out a membership there if it’s still around $10 a month. If worse comes to worse, I’m seriously considering giving the tread mill another go. I used to own a Nordic track back in the 90’s and well, let’s just say things didn’t go well. I used it twice, I think and both times I went sliding off the back of the thing and almost broke my neck. I could see then so I didn’t understand what the problem was. I guess eye/foot coordination was not in my repertoire. Maybe things will be different since I can’t see now. No eye/foot coordination, just foot ear? Hmmm. Well, I’m willing to give it another go if we can’t find another good track to walk during winter.

Oh, and I still need to sell my Pilates machine. No room in my place for it now. Does anyone remember those Health Riders or gliders? You would have to hold on to the handle bars and push down with your feet. I loved that thing. Think my neice sold it when I moved to Lansing . Wish I could find another one. Where’d they all go, anyway?

I seem to be eating a few too many carbs lately. But I’m noticing that I’m hungrier too. Wonder if winter has anything to do with this? Okay, hoping winter has something to do with this, lol! If not then I’m just carb pigging out and I’m gonna have to get it under control. I know one thing, I’m sick to death of Optifast products. It’s definitely time to get off the Weight Management program and go it alone. They need some new flavors. They have three main ones that I know of and only two soup flavors. My fav is the Creamy chicken, but how about beef barley or mushroom even. I will miss that Creamy chicken though.

Okay, I’m gonna go and give sleep a try again tonight. Wish me luck.

Evening, F. S.

It's been a tiring day. I'm still having issues with my C-pap, but i'm gonna keep pluggin' away at it. I really think it's an issue of the mask again. So, i woke up with a sinus headache and lack of sleep. I only got about three hours last night/this morning. I'll give the equipment supply place a call tomorrow and see what they suggest.

weigh in was a bit lack luster. It's cycle time again so i didn't lose what i thought i should have. but i should be grateful...in fact, i am grateful because i didn't gain like last time. So, thank you for my 1.3 pound loss this week. The staff at the weight loss clinic still feels i'm doing well, so that is what i'm focusing on.

My sister and i tried out a new gym this past week. she lives across the street from a Go Workout gym and they offer the residence of her complex a reduced price membership fee. So we got one week free passes to see if it would work for us. I love the track for walking. It's much better than our leading gym here called The Mac whose track is slanted and it's hard to walk when you have to hug the wall for guidance. Their weight machines are pretty cool too. We only have three in my little gym here at my complex, but they have a myriad of them. i got to do some crunches for my upper stomach and Whoa! what a workout. I was sore for about two days. So, Karen will be able to join them, but i can't. we checked to see if they accepted Silver Sneakers and they don't. but i might be able to use the place for two weeks after she joins. then after that i'm SOL. I'm gonna check on the Planet Fitness near us to see if they take Silver Sneakers. I have to see if i even qualify for being disabled. I'm actually not a senior. If not, there's always the mall for winter walking. Major pain but what ya gonna do? i think even if Planet fitness doesn't have silver sneakers, i can afford $10 a month. I hope that promotion is still going on.

My goal is still to slow down chewing and eating a meal for at least 20 mins. I haven't progressed much since last week. I keep forgetting when i sit down to eat. i think it's one of those things where you really have to be in it to get it right. when i started losing my sight years ago, i tried to practice with my cane and work out how it would be when i was actually totally blind. well, i realized that it just was a whole different thing when i actually went totally blind. There's really no way to prepare for something like that. the things that came up after i lost my sight had never even dawned on me when i was practicing being blind. There's no way to anticipate. but i'll still keep trying. can't hurt.

tomorrow is actual first day of yoga. we decided to just go to the afternoon sessions. It will be easier. I'll do better at keeping you posted.

Hi F. S.

had a weird day today. first, i was able to get two of my meals up to taking 10 mins to eat. Now, remember, i eat really small meals so... the other four i didn't bother to calculate. I had some strange happenings go on today.

first, we had a mini power outage in Lansing. I was right in the middle of creating a Click List for Kroger when everything just went quiet on me. the computer was still working but that's because its a laptop and hand switched over to battery power. the internet and everything else including my talking clock went silent. It was eerie. that lasted for about 45 mins and effected my entire complex as well as my sister's complex. her power came on allot faster than ours did however.

then, i got two strange messages from the post office of another district in Lansing referring to a complaint i made online about not receiving my mail. Not sure what that was about. I think some wires got crossed up somewhere. I did put in an ADA request for mail service to be delivered to the mailbox outside my apartment instead of at the bank of mailboxes. The bank of mailboxes for this complex are no where near where i can get to them and there isn't a safe route to them on foot. I mean there isn't one that i can learn and still be safe if i used it that is. I did that in July and was told the request got lost and i'd have to repeat my application for service. I hadn't completed the second application yet, so i'm not sure what is going on.

We didn't make it to yoga tonight Karen had an asthma episode due to the furnace being replaced in her apartment and gas fumes leaking into the place. and i didn't book a paratransit ride for tonight since she and i were going together. so, next week it is. at least the new classes are in the afternoon instead of the evening. we're not evening people i'm afraid.

I've been tired lately and allot more hungry these days. cycle time is slowly creeping up on me and that can reek havoc on me sometimes. I did get a workout in today though.

Well, i'm off. LOL! well, that's too true sometimes. but i'm off to bed i mean. It's after 11 here and i'm usually up by 5 a.m.
