What can I share....turned 30 this year and realizing that I can't quite eat whatever I want any more. This realization has prompted me to begin working to develop healthy habits now. Guess my attitude is, 'if I can get myself in check and following a healthy lifestyle now, hopefully it will be easier to maintain as I get older and life gets a bit more complicated'.

I'm fairly active - started running a couple years ago and try to get to the gym or spend time active outside at least 5 or 6 times a week. No kids yet, so it's easy at the moment. Biggest challenge is working strength training into my routine...would rather do 4 hours of cardio than a half hour of free weights.

Until this year I've never put much focus on my diet or trying to lose weight and subsequently I often feel like a total moron. I also get frustrated b/c despite efforts to eat better and pay more attention, my weight changes very little. Case and point...I ran my first half marathon at 28 and despite running well over 20 miles a week during training I didn't lose a single pound...very discouraging. Since then it's basically been a repetitive pattern - lots of activity, very little change.

Anyway, I'm trying to stay focused on developing healthy habits with an added goal of moderate weight loss. I came to grips with the fact that I will NEVER be 125 lbs (at 5'7 it probably wouldn't be all that healthy for me anyway) - but I'd love to lose just 5 or 10 lbs and feel like I can be in control of my weight either way.

Open to suggestions, feedback, or messages from others in similar a stage and challenge.

Thanks for dropping by ; )

Tough Mudder
Anyone run a Tough Mudder event? Or planning to compete?

I'm signed up for this weekend Tough Mudder Vermont ...excited and overwhelmed at the same time.

Hope the weather holds up and curious what have done in the way of training?

protein ideas
I struggle with the same problem....not sure how you feel about eggs, but I've started boiling half dozen eggs at the start of each week and I try to eat one as a snack every day or so (though, I don't always eat the yoke). It's easy, great source of protein and relatively low calorie.

Down side to LOW low calorie intake?
@Erika - I'm just shy of 5'7 and I weigh about 151 right now. I have a medium to large frame so I'd like to get to the mid to low 140s. I exercise quite a bit - at least three or four days of running 4-6 miles, one day of one hour spin and one day of one hour eliptacle. I also try to do at least a half hour of weight training every other day (though, I could be better with this part). I try to log my food as closely as possible, so my calorie count should be pretty accurate. Food intake is probably a bit carb heavy, fairly low fat - could definitely up my protein - working on that as well. What do you think?

@Sherilyn - I eat AT LEAST 12-1300 calories a day, with a target RDI of 1800 which I'm often almost spot on with. My question was a matter of the days where I come in at 12-1300 - 500 calories less than my target RDI - whether this going to have a negative long term affect on my body and metabolism. I don't want to do anything that is going to shock my body. When I get to a point where I'm just trying to maintain my weight I don't want my body to revolt when I adjust to a more typical calorie intake. Fear not, I'm no where near starving myself and have zero intention of ever going in that direction. Hope this is more clear.

Down side to LOW low calorie intake?
The last couple weeks there have been a few times where I've come in more than 500 calories lower than my target RDI (which I also set lower than what FS suggested).

So my question is, clearly it's helping to drop weight now, but am I doing myself a disservice long term?

Clearly I'm not going to be able to maintain a 1200-1300 cal diet nor do I intend to - I'm not really even meaning to now. Tonight it was more a matter of not wanting to eat a huge meal late (after 8pm), but on other days it's just worked out that way.

Should I be forcing myself to eat a bit more so my body doesn't revolt when I go back to eating normal amounts longer term?

1000 Calories Under and a GAIN?
Thanks so much for your reply!

I know rationally there are good reasons for the numbers, it's just discouraging. Seems like no matter what I do my weight never really changes...stays within the same 2-5 lbs regardless. in this case, even if I only had half the deficit in calories, I'd have guessed I would at least maintain.

BUT, I hear what you're saying - water, solid mass etc does have an impact. And the bigger point is to be more healthy and I know I'm succeeding at that....just have to keep at it I guess.

Thank you again and good luck with your program - looks like you're on a great track!
