MAN I'M FRUSTRATED!!!!

I'm still pressing but DAMN! I just don't get it. I was losing TONS of weight before I joined the gym and started exercising. Now that I have committed to working out 5 days a week for the last two weeks I seem to be stuck! I do not understand! I said I was going to just stay away from my scale for about a month til I got into a good groove with my workouts but I just couldn't help myself this morning. I gained another .4 ounces last week and it's driving me mad. What am I doing wrong? Why am I not losing anymore. I really expected that adding regular exercise to my already healthy eating habits would yeild some significant results or AT LEAST keep up the 2-3 pound loss that I had been having since I started. Im completely confused here and the only thing I can think to do is just keep going and give my body a chance to adjust. Maybe I am expecting too much and being unrealistic. I don't know but this is very frustrating.

Another thing I wanted to get off my chest today... I did a re-evaluation of my daily intake (food) and was shocked to see how much sodium I had been taking in. I was only paying attention to the calories, fat, carbs, and protein but not to the sodium content. I was floored to see how much sodium some of my favorite low calorie food choices have in them, SCARY!!! So this weekend I found myself scared to eat, trying to do a complete makeover of my current choices because they contain way too much sodium. I cannot be afraid to eat... and I refuse to develop any crazy, obsessive habits in an effort to be healthy. I have to preserve both my body and my mind (but this is nuts!!) As I was checking the labels of some of my food choices, I found that things like putting pickles and bananna peppers in my salad and the packaged grilled chiken breast I used... while low in calories and fat, they are all lOADED with sodium! I'm not completely sure how to battle this... it's going to be tuff but I know my body does not react well to sodium and I HAVE to try and keep my intake to 1500 mg a day, max. I don't want this to feel like yet another hurdle to clear... anyone have any low soduim food options to suggest?? I need to take up yoga or some form of meditation to keep my sanity. I don't want to reach my wieght loss goal and become crazy as hell in the process! Sounds comical but I am so sincere... HELP!

I have the same problem....I lost 100 lbs. As soon as I start going to the gym regularly (lifting weights) for toning I start gaining or can't lose. It is really frustrating. I don't know what you are doing in the gym...but maybe try to mix cardio and strength training. Keep your body guessing. As for the sodium...yes! Packaged foods are horribly loaded with sodium. Try to use fresh alternatives. I make my own soups instead of canned. I bake my own chicken breast instead of pre-packaged. It takes more time...but you can cut down on sodium and get better nutrients. Do you do any smoothies? Do a berry, banana, fat free yogurt with protein powder. And drink tons of water.

You both need google "why the scale lies". It is an informative article about how you can gain water weight for many different reasons. When you first start an exercise plan or change your current one, your muscles retain water to help them heal (the muscle fibers get little tears and water replaces to help them heal). This happens especially when you do strength training. It is temporary, but it can make the scale show a gain, small loss or no loss. You need to take your measurements. You can lose fat and not see it on the scale right away. I had a friend who went down 4 sizes and didn't see the scale move for months. As your muscles get used to working out, the scale will start to move again. As you build muscle, your metabolism will start to speed up and losing weight and maintaining your weight will become much easier. They say if you want to look good with your clothes on, lose weight. If you want to look good naked, exercise. Just keep going and focus on the big picture, not just the scale. Many people get to goal and they are just a smaller version of their old self. With exercise, you will be smaller with less fat and you can change your body composition. Your both doing great. Keep goiing!

Calannapy... thanks for understanding! I know I'm not crazy. It is frustrating but it's good to know I'm not alone in the struggle. I do vary my work out. I do a combination of Zumba 3 days a week and Body Pump which is a weight training class twice a week. I also just started doing HIIT 4 times a week before my regular workouts and I am going to try my hand at cycling just to keep my workouts fresh. I also drink tons of water everyday (that is all I drink actually) and I was actually considering juicing fruits and veggies for a while to see if that helped. Thanks so much for the smoothie suggestion. Suzi161... I am going to google the scale article right now. I know that water retention is definitely an issue for me... I actually take an Rx water pill occassionally but I want to get off of that medication completely becuase it's not good for me in the long run. That's another reason why I am really monitoring my sodium intake (makes me swell in my feet and ankles). Thank you so much for the information and the encouragement. I'm going to calm down and keep going. Thanks so much again!
