melmac52's Journal, 04 January 2016

Okay...this is it...I refuse to go through another year of abusing my health. So today I begin to think about what each food does for my health ...if it bad such as sugar or carbs turning quickly into sugar...I must put it down or keep it out of the house until I gain some control back. My visits to the grocery store will be only for whole foods...fish and chicken, veggies and fruit. I must start to weigh everything or measure by cup. Please offer me as much advice as you can. I am 63 years old, just had my third pacemaker battery replaced and have no excuse now to get active...more walking even if it s house activities to exercise shows on the internet.

One of the easiest ways to begin is to do your grocery shopping on the outside edges of the store. That's where the meats, fresh produce, and dairy foods are; it's all the up and down aisles that have the processed foods! I have to weigh and measure, too, because it's too easy to eyeball and eat more than you think you are. When I have a nicely filled plate in front of me, and I know I won't be eating seconds of anything, it sends thoughts to me like 'wow, this is a lot of food, I couldn't eat more than this!' and I savor every bite. I've been heard to say that my mouth might want more (because it tastes so good) but my stomach doesn't, and that helps me, too. Most important is that you enjoy what you eat. It's got to look and taste good or you will feel cheated and deprived. Is your new husband (congratulations!) willing to eat the same way you need to? That helps a lot. I have lots more to lose than you do, but I KNOW I can and I am, this time, and I am not looking at it only as a diet but as re-educating my palate for the rest of my life. It's become kind of fun to see what I can have, how many different meals and recipes I can adjust to fit in low-carb guidelines. Good luck! Keep that heart healthy!

My suggestion is to get one of the apps to track calories and activities not suggesting you go out and buy an activity tracker most phones allow you to download apps to do that write down your game plan so that you can refer to it and use one of the apps to track whatever it is you're going to track calories carbs whatever have a game plan that's the only way you'll ever know if your kind of sticking to it and don't be so hard on your cell because it usually you need to treat that one person who is really special you
