Daddy Manatee's Journal, 14 June 2023

So far the changes to my eating habits, as forced upon me by the recent heart attack, has been successful. Funny how life works. I haven’t really exercised in the last month, swam once, chased down calves once and LOTS of walking. I’m use to being in the gym 5 days a week lifting But here I am with numbers down all across the board. I knew I was dropping as my pants are getting much looser. At the same time I am losing/lost a lot of strength, especially grip strength. I am hoping that will return as I start lifting VERY light weights (20-30 rep range) again next week. Cholesterol levels as follows
Total 77mg/dl
Triglycerides 87
HDL 26 this is the good kind and I am WAY low. Average is >=40!
LDL. 34
210.7 lb Lost so far: 14.3 lb.    Still to go: 10.7 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

Diet Calendar Entry for 14 June 2023:
4183 kcal Activities & Exercise: Apple Health - 24 hours. more...
losing 2.4 lb a week

Unfortunately I am sure most of this loss is loss of muscle mass😖

A lot of lifestyle changes for sure! Glad you are working on your numbers and eating habits are hard to change especially when you were feeding muscle. Our trainer at the gym his dad had a heart attack at the gym and he is getting stronger again and back at it.

Yea I think so too, feeling weaker. Definite muscle loss. But that’s to be expected since you couldn’t stimulate yourself for awhile. Muscle memory is a real thing tho. You’ll get back to where you were faster than before

I was sick for 42 days and didn't work out. I lost a lot of muscle and got poochy in my middle area. I finally got back to working bout and muscle memory is a real thing. It took me about a week or so before I slowly increased weights. I'm still not where I was but it's getting there. The one thing I do notice though is how tired I get after workouts. Your issue was much different than mine but you'll get there again. Just don't rush it, I relapsed from going back full throttle..it was bad. The pooch around middle is still there though ..it's a girl thing and it's being stubborn!😂

I had rotator cuff surgery on May 4th and haven't been able to work out since then. Moreover, my next 10-12 weeks will be devoted to physical therapy & my doctor has indicated that he will be releasing me to start working out on August 14th. I've been so worried & depressed that I'll need months to get back into shape so it's really inspiring to hear that you bounced back so quickly, Diana 1234. Hopefully, muscle memory is not a real myth for me!!

Daddy did you have any warning signs (i have high cholesterol), blockages or anything? You seem like a younger guy and doesn’t look like your weight should be in the high risk area unless you are very very short🧐. You will get back to yourself just go easy.

Manatee, how old are you? And are these Lipid numbers recent (meaning updated since the ones taken when you were in the hospital)?

Glad you are on the mend and will be back lifting soon like you like. Heart attacks are scary and I’m glad you made it through!

I believe triglycerides are the most important to focus on, so I’ve learned recently. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’ve heard the complaint before of grip strength post heart attack! Bear with it brother. Praying for your leisurely healing. Why rush it? ✌️

The test results I have had on the past showed the bad slightly elevated. In my follow up visit with my cardiologist he said my bad cholesterol was lower than his. My recent numbers were from the end of May the labs done for the follow up. What they are more concerned with is how low the good cholesterol is and not much can be done to increase it significantly. Diet and exercise is about it. My younger brother who lifts more than I do and has been since he was in college and also eats better, has lower good than I do. We inherited our grandpas genes it appears. Cleared to exercise again, but again, only in the 20-30 rep range. I’m going to grab my brothers old home gym set and set it up out at the cattle in a little garage out there and sneak in extra reps. Thanks all for the support. Especially since recovery is so frustratingly slow! And JB I am younger than 50.

What I’m wondering about is was there any warning signs that you felt. I remember when I was unhealthy, I had random irregular heart beats, heart pains all at random times. I think I was close to a heart attack had I not changed my ways

Super I don’t think this was my first heart attack. I had these pains before and they would last for hours (never in the arm curiously) I’d take aspirin and soon it would pass. So I was in a bit of denial that anything was wrong. This had a different feel to it( mainly the discomfort in the arm) and I had a distinct impression to go to hospital. 100% blockage in one of the smaller arteries feeding the heart and thankfully no damage done. And this after putting going to hospital off for 5 hours! The biggest change so far has been cutting out eating fast foods all the time. Most of the drop in numbers is from meds.

glad your ok ....heart attacks can be very scary. Take it easy day by day you will get your strength back before you know it.

Manatee— I am relieved that you are laying off the fast food. My grandfather had 5 heart attacks from eating daily burgers. I went vegetarian at 16 when he died because it scared me so bad. You’re too young for this! 💚❤️‍🩹🥺
