If you want to know how much protein you need, go to webmd dot com / food-recipes / protein (Remove spaces and paste into your browser.)

If you are on a high protein diet, please disregard this. This is what it says about Protein:

Protein: Are You Getting Enough?

Most people get enough protein. But are you making the best protein choices, or are you in a rut?

You need protein for your muscles, bones, and the rest of your body. Exactly how much you need changes with age:

Babies need about 10 grams a day.
Teenage boys need up to 52 grams a day.
Teenage girls need 46 grams a day.
Adult men need about 56 grams a day.
Adult women need about 46 grams a day (71 grams if pregnant or breastfeeding)
You should get at least 10% of your daily calories, but not more than 35%, from protein, according to the Institute of Medicine.

Nice loss! Thanks for sharing protein info. I love your weight graph, you are so consistent!

As you age the demands of protein rise because of lower synthesis. The amount needed is also calculated for the 'normal' American. Active people require more.

Those are good guidelines. I've also read you can go up to your ideal bodyweight (as this is an estimate of your current lean body mass). I could technically eat up to 120 grams of protein, and protein keeps one full (and possibly only counts as 3.5 calories per gram instead of 4 due to the additional thermic effect on the body when digesting it) but I just can't afford to eat that much good-quality protein!!

I knew that my protein was 46 grams a day, so I was looking to see how much my husband needs. He is not athletic, so just 56 grams. As others have mentioned, athletic people need more. They probably know how much they need because they are on athletic websites. :)

I've read 35% ... which of course varies depending on 'how much' RDI .. sometimes it's perfect and then I'll eat an apple and my carbs over power the protein percentage again.
