I have a very difficult time this last month!! I am missing my deceased mother a lot!! She just died last year and the holidays are so, so hard!! Everyone seems to think I should be "over" my grieving by now, but I am not. If anyone can offer any suggestions to help me, please do!! I have started to exercise again this week and I hope I can continue on a regular basis!! Thanks in advance for your help!!

Grief is really hard, and everyone goes through it differently, so be gentle with yourself. I know that for me, when I am feeling sad or lonely it's really difficult not to overeat, because food is the main way I was taught to comfort myself growing up (this applies to most people, right?). After the sudden loss of my best friend a few years ago, I channeled a lot of my grief into overeating. I have been trying to learn new, non-food ways to comfort myself when I am distressed. Warm tea has been helpful for when I just want something soothing (especially late at night). Anyway, I don't really have any advice but just know that you're not alone. Hang in there :)

There is no time limit on grief. It can come and go. I lost my sister to brain cancer in 2010. Our whole family misses her. It's especially hard on her kids. This time of year is really hard. Depending on your circumstances, sometimes just going somewhere new or doing something different can help. Exercise helps with stress and depression. Maybe try to give yourself some treats (non food). Get your nails done, your hair, massage, etc. Do things that will help you feel good about yourself.
