Les Girth's Journal, 28 December 2020

Hello everybody. Well, I'm up 4 pounds in a week. Not good.

I'm afraid that I must declare my little keto experiment a failure and return to counting calories. I'm also going to return to a daily weigh in routine so that I can keep a better eye on changes.

I tried something different and it didn't work for me, so it's back to the tried and true!
236.4 lb Lost so far: 27.6 lb.    Still to go: 46.4 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

Doing what is sustainable for you is always key! Good luck!!! I find I am more disciplined when recording my weight here daily. Sometimes I need breaks for my mental health, but overall it works very well for me to keep a close eye on my progress... Or... 😁

Keto didn’t work for me either. 3 weeks gained 2 lbs lost 3. Net loss 1 lb. Not worth it.

I recently did keto for months, lost weight, but returned to my carb eating ways....sadly back to my starting weight. So like you back to counting calories. It wasn’t sustainable for me and I really like fruit and oatmeal.

Curious whether you were counting calories on keto? I'm not a fan, but it can work if you're in a caloric deficit while doing it. Good luck finding what you like best and what makes it easiest to be in a deficit long enough to lose weight.

LaughingChevre, I wasn't counting calories. Maybe I should have. For me, the keto diet became very boring very quickly, so I doubt that it would be sustainable over the long term.

I know what you mean, Les. I went keto for a couple of weeks and could not go longer on a diet where I had to fear tomatoes and watch carbs from avocados. I think it would work if you were in a deficit (like any other diet) but doesn't sound like you like it or find it sustainable, so no need to put yourself through that.

For me it is always about finding a balance. You many calories is bad. Too many carbs is bad. Not enough carbs is bad. No taste or enjoyment is bad. So, I stay 300 calories below my RDA, reduce carbs to twice as many grams as my protein, and eat foods I enjoy once in a while. Weight loss is slow, but steady. And remember, it takes two weeks to reach ketosis for keto to start working.

hi les, keto is a wholesale lifestyle change, abt shifting your body's chosen energy source from carbs to fat. That takes a little time but if u stay the course for a month or 6 weeks, keep your daily carb intake to 20g or less, drink plenty of water, eat your good fats and lean proteins, u'll drop 2 to 10 lbs. It's a good diet in my opinion, but not one that produces overnight results. I'm still finding my way with it, but I have to admit I no longer have that bloated feeling after meals, I have more energy, and clothes r fitting better despite a lack of drastic drops on the scale. There's also alot of good pre-packaged keto food options out there. if u decide to give it another go. That being said yes reducing calories works and was my choice for years too, I just got tired of always being hungry.

Always do what works best for you and what you feel most comfort with! You’ve got this!

The only difference were your food choices otherwise you were still on a CICO diet. You don't have to count them for them to count.

It’s okay I just went threw the same thing and my doctor told me it could just be water weight. So I continued to count calories and I’m back down 3 pounds. So don’t get discouraged. You’ll drop back down in no time 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽

Everyone told me keto was the way to go and that just counting calories wouldn’t work. I lasted 11 days on keto and felt horrible. Ate carb heavy by counting calories and lost 82 lbs. Do what works for you!

bigguy, not without a calorie deficit you won't.

By the way, keto was very dangerous for my Afib. It took about 2 weeks into before it caused episodes. so if you tend toward arrhythmia stay away. A study in China found it started arrhythmia is a small percentage of people. If you already have it, be careful.
