doctorpatg's Journal, 23 March 2008

Hello and happy Easter. Hope you all have a wonderful day. I have been truckin' along, but now my doctor is concerned about my cholesterol and wants me to change diets. I am devastated. Well, not really. I am determined to continue my weight loss. For the sake of continuity, I will remain among the Atkins fold on the site here because I found that when I switched once for only a 2-week period to WW, the graph started over with a new start weight and I want to retain an overall picture. I have ordered the OLD, OLD WW books from the sixties and seventies because those worked for me once. The newer program does not seem to work for me and leaves me famished. Anyway, we'll see. I love Atkins - I have been happy on it for almost a year and I am going to take my time in making any changes, but it looks like I might have to.
157.5 lb Lost so far: 35.5 lb.    Still to go: 17.5 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

Are you on medications too? Zetia (in addition to Zocor) has REALLY helped my husband's cholesterol levels. I'm glad you're staying where we can be there for you. I know what you mean about the graph, though. That happened to my husband, but after only 2 days. I even asked the website administrator and they just can't accommodate keeping the same graph but switching diets.

IMHO you need to find a new doctor. This diet is healthy if you eat whole foods and follow it the right way, moving through the phases. My cholesterol went down on this diet and it didn't on any other diet. Please reconsider. Read "Good Calories, Bad Calories" it explains why this is a healthy diet and why your doctor is mislead about it. Maintenance isn't that different from WW core plan, so please reconsider.

I have been tried on Zetia as well as the "statins" and I do not tolerate then well. It's hard to tell because the symptoms that can be a problem (muscle pain like I'd run a marathon) is sometimes present just because of my rheumatoid arthritis. So it goes. And, about my doctor, he's ok with Atkins - that's not the problem. In fact, he recently lost quite a bit of weight on it. It's my own actual cholesterol level that is up, now to over 300. I have no prior history of high cholesterol. It's been going up over the past few months. I am watching it and my doctor does have me on Niaspan, know that I do not do well with the alternatives.
