Is there a way to avoid plateauing?

Not that I have heard of. I also haven't heard a good reason why plateaus happen, either. I have read when you lose fat, the fat cells take up water, which weighs more. Then when they release the water, you get a decent drop - people call it a "whoosh" .

If you are doing everything the right way, the plateau is needed to reset your metabolism. I do not know the technical terms, but when you plateau while keeping to the diet, your body is actually shrinking. As an example, my sister lost fifty pounds in just a couple of months. In the following two months, the scale did not change, but her clothing size did. Her volume needed to catch up with her weight. This is why we are advised to use the tape measure.
