I have a question about a 24 hour fast. When I do this can I have liquids such as a protein shake? Maybe some broth? I know I’ve been drinking water and Sprite Zero on my first day and right now IF. If someone who knows, could you explain it to me. I don’t wanna do it wrong when I get to that point. I know it’ll be a few weeks but I wanna prepare myself. Thanks.

Well, if you have any "food" intake, and protein shakes are food, that would negate the fast because it's giving your body something to "eat". Liquids would be BLACK coffee, unsweet teas (hot or cold), and water. No juices and try to avoid soda and artificial sweteners, they can sometimes prompt an insulin response in the body.

Hi Emily - Dr. Jason Fung (dietdoctor.com) who is an expert on LCHF/IF diets says that bone broth and small amounts of cream/milk in your tea/coffee are allowed - though using cream/milk means it's not a 'true' fast, he says that it can vastly improve compliance and therefore he absolutely allows it for the patients he works with. His page is an excellent source for information for anyone who is knew to LCHF or IF.

Awesome. I just got finished reading the page crankybuzzard sent me and it was very informative. I think I might do a 24 hour fast next week after thanksgiving. And then work my way to a 36. Thank you both for the amazing info. I will be putting it to good use.

Thinking about it now I will prolly just keep doing IF I seem to like it and I’m not eating so much and when I do eat it’s very minimal. I will “try” a 24 hour probably next year January maybe. Thanks crankybuzzard for reminding me to slow down. Lol it’s always good to hear. As I’m always doing something and at a quick pace.

When I did my 24 hr water fasts I did them once a week and all I drank was water, green tea, and black coffee. I would start at around 8 pm and eat again at 8 pm. It really helped me with binging like it taught me I didn't need to eat everything all day long and I had no dishes to do that day or the worrisome of what to eat and make for that day. I think I did those for about a month.

If the protein shake has calories I think you would not be fasting
