jsfantome's Journal, 28 February 2012

I'm just curious because of yesterday's journal, how often do you give yourself a check up? In general (going back to yesterday for a minute) - I do watch what I am doing on a day to day basis. But I can tell (no matter what the scale says) whether I am putting in 100% effort or not everyday...so I choose to not weigh everyday, because for me, at this stage of the process... I am not going to be making big changes on a daily basis.

So, it ends up driving me batty!

Instead, I focus each day on doing all that I know to do... and look forward to my weekly weigh in with great anticipation that I may actually lose a pound this week! If I am true to myself, and remain focused, and keep it all rolling in the right direction, all things generally come together that I do lose a pound.

Sometimes...I get very distracted. Date night, a special occasion, a mindset that I can 'indulge' with something I haven't had in a long time - just a little - and I can blow my entire week.

I guess in a way it's good to know this... as my body is just very sensitive to losing weight - and obviously - to gaining it!

But I do often give myself a 'checkup'. And I am curious about your mindsets, and whether you check up on yourself with some of the following questions?

Do you track your foods daily? If not, why not? Do you follow a specific plan? or your own version of one? Is it clearly defined? or is it a tad to flexible? Do you make too many adjustments w/ out enough time to see what is, and is not, working?

Do you 'cheat' on yourself? Why do you suppose you do that - if you do?
Have you explored other ways to bring happiness to you, other than food or activities surrounding food?

Have you increased your activity and exercise? Has it affected your energy? your appetite? have you made nutritional changes due to your activity levels?

Do you drink your water daily? If not, why not?

Do you think after about a month of 'focused efforts' that little to no progress is an indicator something needs to change?
If so, do you make changes? If not, why not?

These are just some of the things that I sit and ponder every 3-4 weeks. What am I doing? What could I be doing differently? How can I continue towards my goals?

12 months I have been flirting with and hanging around at this 143-147 mark. I am not happy about that. But I am willing to change it.

That is a lot to think about. I believe that losing weight and maintaining is all about mindset. How you look at weight loss will determine how well you do. I don't know what your height is but I am wondering if you are at the weight that is right for your body. Don't focus too much on your weight otherwise you might miss out on some of the more important things in life. Just my two cents.

D'smom - aside from when I lift food to my lips - this IS the place I focus on food. And on my attitude. And my behaviors. And all things related to why I came here to start with. One day soon, I will be back to the original 140 mark I set for myself, then I will re-evaluate where I want to take this thing from there.

Yes ,yes, yes, I think about all those things at least once a week when I set my personal goal for that week. By now, I've been dieting for a year and a half , I know what works and what doesn't. I've lost 55 lbs. and have 15 to go. Some days I choose to go off but as long as I go back to my plan I'm sure I will reach my goal hopefully this year. That's only 2 lbs. a month. I've made real changes in my food choices and my daily excercise and will make more. I know now I will be on a DIET forever and I will cheat alittle forever

Those are excellent questions! I go through them about every week currently. Some I can't answer the "WHY" and make a not to myself to pay more attention so I can figure out the WHY. Great points. Thanks.

One of the common quotes that I find to be so true is "The only constant thing in life is change". For me that works when it comes to how I think about my fitness journey. I am flexible b/c with life in general you almost always have to be. I feel like I am constantly still learning. Even now that I am comfortable with where I am and feel good about how I've stayed in this vacinity as far as weight I am still open to new things. As far as my indulgences I still have them regularly b/c it works for me. I never want to deprive myself or else I'll totally lose it one day. And if I lose it like that I'm afraid I'd end up right back where I started. I think one of the best things for me outside of consistency and tracking is changing my mind set. I don't beat myself up about my indulgences. I don't even consider it cheating. That way I am not fixed on it and move past it and right back to a healthy routine. Not sure if that will work for me forever but when it doesn't work anymore I'll have to change it up again. Hope that helps. Keep up the great work. Keep us update.

Probably not checking up on myself as often as I should, but have given myself a good dose of it recently!! For me, one issue is that I can gain weight eating on-plan foods! Just means I'm letting the carbs go a bit too high (NC and even TC) and/or I'm letting my calories go too high, both of which are more likely to happen when I'm eating those darned low-carb products (certain flavors of bars, s/f puddings/mousses, tortillas) or peanuts. Because I'm not truly off-plan, eating Cheetos and Oreos for example, it's easy to delude myself into thinking that everything will just work out and that, somehow, weight loss will still occur! NOT!!!! Your group is so lucky to have you as a facilitator...if they don't know it, we'll all tell them!

thanks Sandy! ;) - and for sure, I have been there too! I mean, really! if you can't occasionally eat a 'low carb' something - you will likely end up at the bottom of the Cheetos Bag! So, I just count those weeks as a must - small gain or maintain... it's better than falling head first into the deep end of a cake!
