Up at 3:45, and into my 2.3 mile run. Not a cloud in sight, and nearly 65F. No breeze, and I'm half-way into the run, and starting to sweat. Just finished the first hill, speeding up a little to make up some time before hitting the last hill on the return leg. And of course, I'm inside on the treadmill. Done. Feeling pretty good. 2.3 miles feels like a warm-up now. Seemed like such a short time ago that I couldn't go 2.3 minutes; now I'm not even starting to work up a sweat until 15 minutes has passed. A few stretches, and it's off to feed the labs, give the cats their snacks, eat a little breakfast, take a shower and off to work. How does that Army commercial go? "We do more before 5:00 AM than most people do all day." I like that. It works for me. I get the blood flowing and the joints moving. Gives me a good start to the day. When the warm weather gets here, I'll also find the time to go out for some trail runs in the evenings, but those will be recreational runs; my morning workouts are a lifestyle change that will better the odds that each day will be a great day!

Yesterday, I waged war with cravings from the time I got to work until I sat down at the dinner table in the evening. I ate the sandwich, that I had brought for lunch, at 9:30 AM. I lost ground, I gained ground. In the end, I went a couple hundred calories over my RDI for the day, but surprisingly, it felt like a victory. I could have easily went 1,000 over, but I didn't. I still made good choices; I didn't eat anything at work that I hadn't brought with me for lunch, and I didn't hit the cafeteria or the vending machines. I didn't snack at home. I did concede to eat a larger than life hamburger at home, that ultimately took me over my RDI, but after supper, I was done. The war with the hunger monster was over; I licked my wounds (as well as the mustard and ketchup) and relished in the comforting fatigue of having fought the good fight.

I am curious DK... What time do you get to bed? Just wondering how much sleep you get, as you get up so early

Haha! I usually get to bed by 10:00 pm. Sometimes I get a little sleepy driving to work because it's a 45:00 minute commute, and I'm probably still in the recovery period from my exercising. But, all in all, I'll average between 5 and 6 hours per night, depending on how long the run is going to be in the morning. I've gotten kind of used to getting by on that. Sometimes, I won't set the alarm on a Friday night, and I'll actually sleep for 7 or 8 hours. Good thing I don't do a marathon before I go to work, huh!

Einstein is claimed to have needed 10 hours of sleep every night to function well. I figure I'm about half as smart as him, so I only need half as much sleep.

How the hell are you up and running at 3:45?

Hahaha! Convert them to mp3's and it will help you sleep at night. As far as getting up early, I think it's sometimes a matter of "pay me now or pay me later." It's too hard to get motivated to run after I've gotten home and eaten, and it's not fair to make my wife wait until after I've run, for her to eat - since I don't get home from work until about 6. I know, if I skip a workout in my condition, there's a chance I won't be able to pull the next one off. So, I bit the bullet, get my butt out of bed, and go run. They say it takes about 7 weeks to become a habit; well, it's been about 19 weeks since I started this journey and it has become a habit.

DKing you are hilarious. I love you comment about Einstein. I will be using that one. I do think you can use the Army logo any day of the week. I commend you. That is way to early for me. As for the cravings, make sure that as you increase your run time you are giving your body the food it needs to keep up with this amazing pace. Maybe the craving are more your body asking for more nourishments. Just a thought.

OMG DK I couldn't survive on 5-6 hours, I am a 7-8 hour a night girl :-)

You could be right M; but I have to be careful about just how much indulgence I excuse. I have come to the conclusion, and I may get some pushback on this, that it may be more important what you eat, than the fact that you overindulged a bit. I don't think the experts have it all together as far as what goes into making muscle, what gets stored as fat, and who's on first. However, I'm pretty sure I can bump up my activity level and eat a whole lot more green and yellow veggies and fruit without getting fat(ter).

;) Yes you can!!! (and from my perspective - it is the quality that matters!) You probably could eat a whole lot more of a lot of different things.. but then let's not go there! ;)

With that much running, it's no wonder your bod was screaming for food! The burger sounds delish... except for the ketchup. I guess it depends on the kind of ketchup. Great work, man, I could never get up THAT early... and I went to bed about the same time. Keep it up DK!

Haha; you guys are probably all night-owls. There are times I get a little sleepy during the day, but it passes. I have evenings when I feel especially tired, and then I have no problems wandering off to bed at 9:00 instead of 10 - especially if I know I've got a long run in the morning, and I'm going to get up at 3. You have to listen to your own bodies. If you're draggin every day, get more sleep. If you're still draggin every day, see a doctor. I think the body is an amazing thing that can adjust to almost anything, but there are times when it tells you, "Enough is enough." I used to get very annoyed with my wife's back-doctor about 30 years ago, because he would go to sleep while he was examining her, yet he would wake up and know everything she said to him. He worked around the clock and would nap like that - on the go - all the time. One thing that I have going for me that a lot of people don't have is: I am sound asleep within 5 minutes of my head hitting the pillow, and I usually sleep very well until the alarm goes off. I'll usually hit the "snooze" once to let myself aclimate to my surroundings - to ensure that I haven't been abducted by aliens or anything - and then I'm up and putting on my running gear.

I agree with you DKing, and I'm curious as to what the rest of you think about what is more important when losing weight. I have come to understand that for me it is more important what I eat but at the same time if I don't workout I don't have the motivation to eat right. It is a vicious cycle.

I envie your ability to sleep so well. No wonder you are ready to go at 3.30am! I also fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow but I wake up during the night and worry about things, which turn out to be nothing in the morning! That's why I need so many hours in bed. Or maybe it's the genius within me! ;)

Yes, LaraStar, I noticed the genius aura about you right off. That's not an issue with me though - not so much to rattle around in there and keep me awake. :) Tonight I'll probably go to bed around 10, get up at 3 and do my 3.3 mile run, but then I get to sleep in an extra hour Thursday morning because that's a rest day. It all works out.
