I think the first step you should take is to use all the tools on this site. Start recording everything you eat. Once you get a few regular foods in there it won't take so long to find everything. Then you will be able to see some solid facts about calories you're getting every day, and can start to alter your diet accordingly. Husbands are dumb sometimes :) Apologies are always good!

:) Ok, yeah, I'm trying to get used to navigating around this site. I see lots of different diets, but don't see any real info about them. I've heard of weightwatchers and atkins and southbeach, but don't know what the rules are

I don't know any of the rules for those diets either. I am too busy to bother trying to figure them out. All I do is log all my food, and try to make sure I burn more calories each day than I eat. That way I can still eat anything I like (in moderation of course). It's just more flexible than saying 'no carbs' or 'only protein' or anything like that. As long as I am burning more calories than I am eating, I am going to lose weight, one way or another.
