northernmusician's Journal, 25 February 2016

I usually do a half fast today (Thursdays) but my day is hectic. I'm beginning to understand why so many bodybuilders eat 5 times a day. I don't buy into the bro science as protein slows the digestive tract until digestion is complete, but with one fast day a week, I'd still be eating an average of 600 calories per meal. Today I won't do the half fast, but I will just not eat to maintenance. I'll see where I fall. I'm not worried about the weight 'gain'. It's just a water bump.

This is a random thought and I don't really expect a reply, but I wonder how much your groceries cost.

Not sure if you are a bodybuilder, but in my day, I was working out for football at Bill Pearl's gym in Pasadena, California. He was the only other 5 time Mr. Universe, other than Arnold. It was interesting watching his massive workouts, and was on very strict protein diets. I learned a lot from him. I also worked with one of the strongest women in the world. She won a medal in the Olympics at that time. She was much stronger than me. lol....and I was lifting amazing weight, like over 400 lbs. bench.

Omg how do you even fast? Sometimes in Saturdays with lots of errands I can go with only coffee til about 230, have a small snack and then wait until dinner ... But day to day at the office I'm starving by 930 and I'm drinking the same coffee and even more water since it's my work day routine. I don't get it ...

@Lotus I broke an 18 hour fast this afternoon at three, it's really a lot easier to adapt to than you might think.

Your flesh will scream and try to convince you you are dying without food but you can. It is possible to continue to workout and fast a full 40 days if you chose to but that is only recommended if you are seeking God, not as a norm. You have to make a decision and stick to it. Not easy but possible.

Lotus work on fasting gradually.

Lotus, I have my coconut oil coffee around 5 am, another around noon, then supper around 6. Lots of energy thruout the day, go to the gym. Am not hungry at all. So in effect, intermittent fasting every day as the oil doesn't spike levels.....

Rckc has some good advice...I do 2 cups early in the morning and I could go till the next day if i wanted to....never get hungry with bullet proof coffee...I have learned to love the taste also. i never eat three meals any longer....so much energy now with keto life style..

@Watcher We bought a beef and had it cut for under $4 a pound. Buying it off the shelf here is $7 for the cheap cuts. Moose and cutting it myself is cheaper. So is bear. So are huckleberries and raspberried picked by yours truly. Need to plant a garden. Oh, and it's not food, it's fuel. @Warren. How cool to have worked out at Bill Pearls Gym!!! Female with a 400 pound bench? Wow! Must have been a juicer. No option. I'm a lifter. Not sure I'm a bodybuilder. I tend to switch back and forth between bodybuilding and power lifting and may take a shot at Olympic, though I'd like to get some training for the Olympic styles. Picking up Olympic plates today. I bought the bar through Amazon. Psyched. @Lotus It's not as bad as it sounds. If you do it on a down day like Sunday to begin with your body gets used to it. After that you hardly notice. @Michelle Longest fast I've done is 10 days water only. It was... cold. :) @Rckc Though I don't really count it a fast if I've done a bulletproof, I do agree about the lack of insulin response from fats. You get a bit of energy, but not enough to really fuel yourself with it to a great degree. I think the bulletproof keeps us from the insulin spike and, let's face it, comforts us with that beautiful nectar provided for us.

As someone who eats 5-6 meals per day, I don't believe in the bro-science of it either. I just cant stand the feeling of being hungry.
